D K Shivakumar demands Bharat Ratna honour to be conferred on late Devaraj Urs

Mysuru, Jan 24: Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has urged the Centre to confer coutry’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, to former chief minister late D Devaraj Urs, hailed as the champion and voice of the downtrodden Dalits in Karnataka.

Speaking to media persons at Periyapatna in Mysuru district on Wednesday, he welcomed the decision to award Bharat Ratna posthumously to former Bihar chief minister Karpuri Thakur while also expressing the opinion that late Devaraj Urs should be awarded the Bharat Ratna too.

‘’The Kannadigas demand that late D Devaraj Urs be awarded the Bharat Ratna as he made immense contribution to the welfare of the Dalits in Karnataka,’’ he said.

Earlier, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had also demanded that the former pontiff of the Siddaganga Math Dr Sri Shivakumara Swamiji, hailed as ‘’nadedaduva devaru (walking god),’’ who passed away in 2019 at 111 years must be conferred Bharat Ratna posthumously.
