Two Lawyers Dead in Firing by Government Employees

Lucknow, Sep 3: Two lawyers were killed while several others were critically wounded following a clash between Lekhpals and lawyers at Mohammadi Tehseel of Lakhimpur Khiri district around 150 kms from Lucknow on Saturday September 3. The incident occured when Lekhpal, who is a government employee of revenue department, opened indiscriminate firing from a rifle killing two lawyers and injuring several others.

In retaliation, the lawyers went on rampage and set more than 50 vehicles on fire and damaged offices. Heavy police force was sent to diffuse the situation. Three companies of PAC were rushed from Lucknow  while Divisional Commissioner Lucknow Prashant Trivedi ADG Lucknow range Subesh Kumar Singh air dashed to the Mohammadi Tehseel.

The genesis of the clash is reported to be a tussle between lawyers and a Lekhpal Ajayendra Awasthi. Lawyers had complained of high handed attitude of Awasthi who is posted in Mohammadi Tehseel for past two decades. They had demanded his transfer thus the two groups were not at good terms with tension brewing between them. On Saturday, the issue once again erupted with both the groups having heated arguements followed by scuffle. Later, there was stone pelting and amidst this someone from Lekhpal's side opened indiscriminate fire from a rifle
killing Pradeep Dixit and Mukul Tewari both were killed while half a dozen other lawyers along with Anand Shukla, who is owner of Mohamedi petrol pump and one Raees all were critically injured. Reports claimed that Raees also had died but it could not be confirmed.

Senior police officers which included SP Lakhimpur Kheri, Amit Chandra and SP city, Rajeev Malhotra were the first to reach the spot and shifted the injured to District Hospital.  Police have detained two dozen lekhpals including Ajayendra Awasthi and the rifle has been confiscated. The situation is stated to be tense but under control.

Meanwhile several bar associations of the state and other opposition parties have condemned the incident terming it as a failure of state government.
