Five Women Drown as Vehicle Plunges into Canal


Lucknow, Sep 3 (IANS): Five members of a family -- all women -- drowned while 10 others were injured when the vehicle carrying them plunged into a canal in Uttar Pradesh?s Muzaffarnagar district, police said Saturday.

The accident took place late Friday in Kandhla town, about 350 km from here, when the locally-made motor vehicle spun out of control.

?With the assistance of locals, we fished out the body of five women. The injured are being treated at a hospital, where the condition of four-five is said to be critical," police inspector Ajay Singh said.

The victims -- aged 25-40 years -- were returning to their native Titetarwa village after attending a function on the outskirts of Muzaffarnagar when the accident took place.
