Kolkata law college principal goes on indefinite leave after CID probe ordered against her

Kolkata, Oct 13 (IANS): Sunanda Goenka, principal of the Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College in Kolkata, went on an indefinite leave from Friday after a CID probe was ordered against her on charges of securing a job by producing forged documents.

The probe was ordered on Thursday the Calcutta High Court’s single-judge bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who also authorised the CID to question Goenka in the matter and if necessary, take her into custody.

He directed the CID to submit a preliminary report by October 18.

Although there was demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe in the matter, Justice Gangopadhyay rejected it, saying: "This is a local matter involving one college and hence the CID of state police is fit enough to carry out the investigation."

The city police started the investigation against Goenka following a complaint filed in 2018 by a former member of the governing board of the college who accused her of submitting forged documents, as well as involvement in financial irregularities.

The Charu Market Police station filed an FIR in November 2019.

Later, the probe was shifted to the Kolkata Police's anti-fraud section.
