Kolkata, Sep 30 (IANS): Trinamool Congress, which is under attack by the BJP’s central leadership and National Commission for Women (NCW) after the body of a young woman with her throat slit was found in an orchard in Swarupnagar in West Bengal's North 24-Parganas district, has slammed the Centre and Border Security Force (BSF) over the issue, saying it comes under their jurisdiction.

In a statement, Trinamool Congress state general secretary and the state party spokesman Kunal Ghosh has claimed that the body of that woman, who in all probability was a Bangladeshi citizen, was detected close to the border point, which is an area under the jurisdiction of the BSF.

“BSF is supposed to monitor activities in areas 50 kilometers from the border point. BSF is under the jurisdiction of the Union government. So it is for the Union government and the BJP to answer how that woman reached that point and how the tragedy happened. As far as state police are concerned, they are carrying out their investigation part efficiently,” Ghosh said.

Meanwhile, after BJP Information Technology cell chief Amit Maliviya and the Union minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi launched a scathing attack against West Bengal government and the ruling Trinamool Congress on this issue, on Friday, the NCW also seems to be taking up this issue in a major way.

In a post on X, (formerly Twitter), on Saturday morning, the NCW has demanded a comprehensive action taken report from the state administration in the matter within the next five days.

“Appalled and deeply saddened by the horrifying incident in Swarupnagar, Basirhat, West Bengal. The girl was brutally raped and burnt. The atrocities inflicted upon the victim is beyond words. The National Commission for Women demands immediate action. We have taken cognisance of the matter and ask the police to swiftly investigate and, if allegations are substantiated, invoke relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code. Arrests must be made promptly. We expect a comprehensive action report within 5 days,” NCW’s X message read.
