Kashmir Bus Accident Toll Rises to Nine


Srinagar, Jul 30 (IANS): With another injured passenger succumbing to his injuries, the number of casualties in Saturday morning's bus accident in Jammu and Kashmir rose to nine, a doctor said.

A bus rolled into Lidder stream in Laganbal village, 78 km from here, as it was approaching Pahalgam hill station in south Kashmir, witnesses told IANS on the phone.

Twelve critically injured passengers were referred for special treatment to a hospital in the summer capital here.

"A massive relief and rescue operation has been mounted by the police and other wings of the local administration," Shafqat Ahmad Watali, deputy inspector general of police, told IANS.

Eight passengers died on the spot and 32 others were injured. The bus was coming from Khirrum village.
