Nawaz Sharif begins fresh term as party chief

Islamabad, July 28 (IANS) Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has begun a new term as president of the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Nawaz Sharif was declared elected unopposed as the PML-N president after a gap of 10 years at the party's General Council meeting Wednesday, Dawn reported.

In his acceptance speech, Sharif voiced guarded support for the demand for creating new provinces in the country to push development.

"Creation of new provinces is not a bad thing. However, it should be done on administrative grounds."

"I am in favour of creating new provinces when and where these are necessary to resolve the people's problems," Sharif added.

Sharif noted that if new provinces were made on linguistic, racial or ethnic basis, it would damage the country's integrity.
