Centre Agrees on Creation of Autonomous Gorkha Body

New Delhi, Jul 18: The Central Government has agreed to create a seperate Gorkhaland Territorial Administration which will supposedly have more administrative powers than the existing Darjeeling Gorkha Council.

Following the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) meeting Home minister P Chidambaram has been directed to Kolkata to sign the agreement with the  members of the West Bengal government, the Centre and the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJM).

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a meeting with GJM president Bimal Gurung and other top party leaders on Sunday July 17 in this regard.

Meanwhile, a CPM-backed group has called a bandh in North Bengal in protest. Shops in Sukna on Monday remained closed and roads were empty.
