Gilani Calls For Strengthened Pakistan-Sri Lanka Ties


Islamabad, Jul 16 (IANS): Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has called for wide-ranging measures to further strengthen the Pakistan-Sri Lanka relations.

Talking to Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris here, Gilani noted the Joint Economic Commission meeting was being held after a gap of six years, and stressed that regular meetings were needed for further expansion of the trade and commercial relations.

The prime minister said that a meeting has been scheduled in August in Colombo to move ahead on the negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two countries.

He said there was a need for the two countries to cooperate with each other in education, and training of nurses and teachers, reported Associated Press of Pakistan.

He said collaboration in sectors like cement, sugar, pharmaceuticals, gems and jewellery would add a deeper dimension to their relationship.

Gilani said both Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been victims of terrorism and remain committed to counter this threat till its elimination.
