Delhi to Combat Floods this Year

New Delhi, Jul 12 (IANS): With the onset of the monsoon, the Delhi government is determined to control floods in the capital this year, local Irrigation and Flood Minister Ashok Kumar Walia Tuesday said after visiting flood-prone areas here.

"This time, we are taking all the required precautions to escape last year's situation. We will take all necessary steps to control floods, if they occur," Walia told IANS.

Several parts of Delhi were flooded as the Yamuna overflowed last year.

Some low-lying areas near the river, including Garhi Mandu, Usmanpur Pusta, Jagatpur village and Shastri Nagar, were inundated. This prompted thousands of people to stake shelter in government relief camps.
