Lucknow, Jul 12: Relating to the death of Dr Y S Sachan, deputy chief medical officer of Lucknow health department, who was arrested for his alleged role in a scam relating to misuse of funds under National Rural Health Mission, and also in the murder of chief medical officers, Dr V K Arya and Dr B P Singh, the police arrested A K Shukla, chief medical officer of Lucknow. Sachan, who died on June 22, was working under Shukla before being suspended from service. Shukla was arrested on Tuesday July 12.
The UP police had registered a case of misuse of funds against Shukla on April 7 this year. Sachan was arrested in this case two days later. The fact that Sachan died a day earlier to his interrogation about Shukla’s involvement in the said scam had made the police to suspect Shukla’s hand in Sachan’s death.
The police had been investigating the role of A K Shukla, who is suspected to have played a major role in the said scam, since some time. Shukla, who had stoutly denied charges of funds misappropriation, had stuck to the stand that the funds he had released were properly accounted for and audited. The police strongly suspect Shukla’s involvement with the said death. The policemen had recently said that Shukla, who faces a case of financial bungling registered in the past, had gone missing after the death of Sachan. The police had said that a notice had been served on him to appear in person at Wazirgunj police station for recording his statement, but Shukla was not available even after reasonable search.
A one-man judicial panel that had been appointed to investigate the death of Y S Sachan under suspicious circumstancea, completed its work and handed over its report on Monday. The report, prepared by Rajesh Upadhyay, chief judicial magistrate here, was handed over to sessions judge Lucknow, district magistrate, and senior superintendent of police, it is gathered.
It may be recalled that the court had expressed serious concern about the investigation, and had directed the investigating officer to file progress report on July 26.
