Panjim, May 22: Sesa Goa has bagged the prestigious CSR Excellence Award for its active and valuable contribution to corporate social responsibility along with safety awards for its Pig Iron plant, Met Coke division and Ship building division respectively. Promoted by Green Triangle Society, and Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) the awards are a testament to Sesa Goa’scommitment to community building and social responsibility.
Sesa Goa’s mining division won the Late Manikant Hiralal Shah Memorial Gold Medal for excellence in community and social welfare whereas its Metcoke division won the same award in environment category.
In the safety Category Sesa Goa’s Metcoke division won the Gomant Sarvochcha Suraksha puraskar for most outstanding performance in safety during 2010 in C catgory for industries having employee strength of 251 to 500. In the large category ie D for industries having more than 501 employees Sesa Goa’s Pig Iron Division at Amona won the Gomant Uchcha Suraksha Puraskar for outstanding performance in safety during 2010. Shipbuilding unit of the company also won the Gomant Uchcha Suraksha Puraskar for outstanding Performance in B category which is for industries having employees 101 to 250.
The award was handed over by Agatha Sangma, union minister of state for rural development at an award ceremony held in the city. Also present at the ceremony was the Manguirish Pai Raikar, president, Green Triangle Society and S M Paranjape, chief inspector of Factories and Boilers. The awards were received by the Company’s Business Managers N L Vhatte, G P Kamat and Vishal Sharma along with functional heads and the union representatives
The award applauds Sesa Goa’s effort to maintain its pre-eminent position in safety and environment and to develop the communities that it operates in. The company which is India's largest producer and exporter of iron ore in the private sector believes in sustainable development and responsible mining.
The applications were marked and evaluated based on rigorous standardisation procedures by independent adjudicators. The panel comprising of Dr Dilip Deobagkar, vice chancellor of Goa University; Vishram Gupte, chairman of Sangath; Prabhu, DGM of Reserve Bank of India; and Kishore M Shah, the director of Ideaz Unlimited was headed by chief secretary, S K Srivastava. The entries were evaluated based on outcome, sustainability and documentation of the CSR activities as well as the sustainability and long term benefits of the programme
