Anyone living in India is Hindu, says RSS chief

Shillong, Sep 26 (IANS): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said all people living in India are Hindus in terms of identity.

Elaborating the RSS' philosophy, Bhagwat said that Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life.

Addressing a gathering in Shillong, the RSS chief said all are Hindus as all Indians are the inhabitants of Hindustan, which, he said is in the south of the Himalayas, north of Indian Ocean, on the bank of the Indus river.

"The habitants of this area are traditionally called Hindus. This is also called Bharat," said Bhagwat, who arrived here on Saturday on a two-day visit.

He said that even before the Mughals who have spread Islam and the British rulers who spread Christianity, Hindus were already in existence.

Highlighting the ideology of RSS, Bhagwat said the term 'Hindu' covers all those who are the sons of 'Bharat Mata', descendants of Indian ancestors and who live in accordance with Indian culture.

Ruling out the fear of religious conversion, the RSS supremo said to become Hindu one does not have to change since everyone here is Hindu.

"India is not a country with a western concept. It has been a cultural country since time immemorial; in fact, it is such a country, which has taught the world the lesson of humanity."

Since Saturday, he has attended a series of events, including the meeting of RSS functionaries and workers across the hill state.

Several BJP leaders, members of Hindu organisations attended the events organised by the Meghalaya unit of RSS.

Bhagwat's visit to Meghalaya -- a Christian majority state, assumes significance as Assembly elections are scheduled to be held there in February next year.

Elaborate security arrangements were made in the state in view of the visit of Bhagwat, who has a 'Z Plus' security cover.

Bhagwat and the RSS should be denounced for their attacks on the citizenship rights of Indians. The medieval ideas and attitudes of Sanghis have no place in 21st century India.

These leaders instead of leading for the development of the country mislead the people. He is poor in History. Christianity started in India in the year 52 A.D though St. Thomas . It is humerous to say that even before the Mughals who have spread Islam and the British rulers who spread Christianity, Hindus were already in existence..Christianity religion started only after birth of Jesus Christ 2022 years ago. The question of Hindus were in existence does not arise here. Jesus Christ is the God of humanity of all mankind. Everyone is free to follow Jesus . The origin of Christianity is after Jesus Christ. India is not a country with a western concept, then why these leadervs are sending their Children to western countries, medical aid, technology from western countries? It is also acceptable that God can not born everywhere in western, eastern, Southern or Northern counties. God is God wherever he is born. Christians always respect the country and strive for the development of the nation and this truth these leaders find hard to digest .

I originate from the Indian sub-continent, hence I am Hindu ! Of or originating from what is known to the world as the Indus Valley civilisation. ///In his “Discovery of India”, chapter 3 , The Quest, The Panorama of India's past; Jawaharlal Nehru wrote : “The mighty rivers of India..........The Indus or Sindhu, from which our country came to be called India and Hindustan,........”////Lt Colonel Rifat Nadeem Ahmad has penned an erudite article in ‘The Friday Times - Naya Daur’, dtd. November 19, 2021; titled “ What’s In A Name: The Strange Process By Which The Subcontinent’s Two Large Countries Came To Be Known As India And Pakistan”: Quote In the 6th century BC, the Persians conquered a vast empire stretching to Egypt and Turkey. In 535 BC, they arrived in the Indus Valley. They must have been awestruck when they laid their eyes on the mighty Indus. The local inhabitants identified the river and its land as ‘Sindhu’. In Old Persian, the initial letter ‘s’ of a word was usually rendered as an aspirate ‘h’. Thus ‘Sindhu’ in Sanskrit became ‘Hindu’ in Persian, while the land around it was called ‘Hindush’ or ‘Hind’. Two hundred years later, Alexander the Great arrived in the Indus Valley after conquering the Persian Empire. The Greeks dropped an aspirate of their own and pronounced ‘Hindu’ (Sindhu) as ‘Indos’ and called the area ‘Indica’. When the Greek texts were later translated into Latin, ‘Indos’ was Latinised into ‘Indus’ and ‘Indica’ into ‘India.’ And this is the name by which the rest of Europe came to recognise the Subcontinent...........In 224 AD, a new dynasty arose in Persia called the Sassanians, who reconquered large parts of the Indus Valley. In the meantime, their language had evolved into what is now referred to as Middle Persian, which used the suffix ‘-stan’ to denote a region or country.Unquote

Any one living in India is only Indian or Hindusthani & not Hindu as this person says. He needs some history lessons about British Converting people to Christianity which is a big lie or he is either ignorant or spreading lies purposefully. Christianity entered India 2000 years back in Kerala. It is the Portuguese who were in Goa did conversions while British were here only to plunder & loot our rich natural resources & other wealth. If British did that then One Half of India would have been Christian. Only one religion spread to India through sword & none other used forced conversions other than Portuguese.
