Chennai Mathematical Instt to set up F.C. Kohli Centre of Excellence

Chennai, Dec 21 (IANS): The Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), one of the premier institutions for teaching and research in mathematics, on Monday said it is establishing the "Dr F.C. Kohli Centre of Excellence for Advanced Research in Mathematical and Computing Sciences" in honor of the visionary who created and shaped the Indian information technology (IT) industry.

The Institute has a committed donation of Rs 10 crore to establish this centre.

According to CMI, the corpus will be augmented by raising funds from corporate foundations, community groups, colleagues and well-wishers.

Using the funds, it will establish a Centre of Excellence and Endowed Chairs, as well as provide grants for advanced research in areas such as data science, quantum computing and complexity theory, the CMI said in a statement.

"My compliments to CMI on this great initiative that perpetuates the memory of a legendary personality like Dr F.C. Kohli," said Dr Anil Kakodkar, former Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission and Trustee of CMI.

"I am certain that his passionate dream of advancing research and teaching in mathematical and computing sciences would flourish at CMI. In the process, CMI, a very special institution, would also get a boost and reach greater heights," he added.

The CMI is a deemed-to-be-university that is globally acknowledged for its excellence in combining research and teaching in mathematical sciences.

It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral programmes in mathematics and related fields such as computer science, physics and data science and has deep linkages with some of the best global universities in the US and Europe.
