Dakshina Kannada, Udupi battered by incessant rainfall

Mangaluru, Oct 14: Due to the fall in atmospheric pressure experienced in Andhra Pradesh coast over the Bay of Bengal, both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts got rain without break the entire day on Tuesday October 13.

The rain was very heavy at the foot of the Western Ghats and rural areas. Urban areas reported moderate to good rainfall. The rivers in the coast have got increased inflow. As trees, branches, electric poles etc kept falling, power outages was a common phenomenon all through Tuesday. A house in Puttur suffered partial damage due to rains. Parts of Udupi and Mangaluru did not have power supply on Tuesday due to heavy rain and wind.

Places in the catchment areas like Mulky, Talipady and Kallamundkur, standing water threatened to destroy the crops before receding. Mangaluru tahsildar Guruprasad said that the damage to crops was not extensive. Paddy crop that was either ready for being harvested or harvested and left to dry in the fields suffered damages.

Taking into the rainfall from dawn to dusk on Tuesday, Belandoor in Puttur received highest rainfall of 82.5 cm. Kaniyoor with 78 and Ubaradka Mittadka in Sullia with 68 cm stood at second and third spots. Ajekar in Karkala, Kervashe, and Shirur in Byndoor, Chara, Hebri and Kabbinale in Hebri taluk, Mudrady etc received rainfall of over 115 mm, the state natural disaster response force stated.

During the 24 hours ended 8.30 am on Tuesday, Bantwal received 16.4 cm rainfall while Beltangady and Mangaluru received 28.2 cm and 19.5 cm rainfall respectively. Orange alert has been extended to Wednesday and the department has predicted widespread rain coupled with thunder and lightning. As wind velocity at sea might exceed 40 to 50 knots, fishermen have been warned to stay away from the sea. On Tuesday, because of strong wind, huge waves were seen lashing at the shore.
