Coastal Karnataka experiences patches of rain, rivers overflowing

Mangaluru, Aug 7: Heavy rain continued in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Thursday August 6. However, in the afternoon, the rain subsided for some time and allowed people to attend to their work.

Artificial floods were reported from various places. Six houses were damaged in Bantwal taluk and damage to roads were reported from several places. Fallen trees blocked traffic on some roads. Flood water entered a number of areca and rubber plantations. A huge boulder got deposited on the road at Charmadi Ghat and operation was launched to shift the same.

Bisale Ghat hill suffered partial landslide and mud got deposited on the road. Rivers are overflowing and all the sluice gates of Thumbe vented dam were opened to allow excess water to flow into the sea. Huge waves are lashing at the seashore at places like Malpe and Kota. Near Kadekar, sea water flowed over the fisheries road and united with river water.

As the tunnel section of the Konkan Railway at Pernem within Konkan Railway Karwar division was affected by heap of mud which crashed down from the hill, the trains were diverted to alternative roads. No loss was reported, and railway officials are striving to restore traffic. As such, Ernakulum-Nizamuddin superfast, Thiruvananthapuram-Mumbai LTT train, New Delhi-Thiruvananthapuram, Nizamuddin-Ernakulam and Mumbai LTT-Thiruvananthapuram, and Thiruvananthapuram-New Delhi special trains will move on Margao-Londa-Miraj-Pune-Panvel- Kalyan route till August 20.

Bhagamandala in Kodagu district received 49 cm rain, the highest in the state. Kottigehara received 39 cm while Hosanagara got 19 cm. The meteorological department expects rains in the coast and south interior parts of the state and a few places in north interior Karnataka. It has issued orange alert on August 7 and 8 in the coast. The fishermen have been warned not to enter the sea as it will be turbulent.
