Mangaluru, Jun 17: Coastal areas experienced rain coupled with thunder and lightning in night on Tuesday June 16. The city got intermittent rainfall with cloudy weather on other times. Water inundated low lying areas in the city and at many places where repair works are going on, as a result of which movement of traffic was affected.

Good rainfall was reported from Kundapur in Udupi district, Karkala, and other parts. Several houses located at a lower latitude in Padubidri were covered with water. Artificial floods have also happened due to unscientific and unfinished works at certain places.

Movement of heavy vehicles on Agumbe ghat road has been banned. An uprooted tree at Siddapur in Kundapur taluk partially crushed a cattle shed belonging to Daru residing near Karoor primary school.

Sea erosion at Ullal has been threatening to consume trees and structures. A house at Someshwar collapsed due to the advancing waves on Tuesday. The house near Rudrapade in Someshwar had been partially damaged during the previous rainy season. The house had developed cracks due to the lashing of waves and came down as the owner watched on Tuesday. Protective wall undertaken near summer sand and the permanent protective wall work at Ullal are still at the half-way stage and hence they are creating problems.

Kollur and Gokarna received ten cm of rainfall each. The monsoon was weak in north Karnataka. Most of the areas in the coast received between five and six cm of rainfall.

The meteorological department has predicted widespread rainfall in most parts of the coast in a prediction valid till Thursday morning. Orange alert on Wednesday and yellow alert between June 18 and 21 have been sounded by the department.

Yellow alert has been issued also for Kasargod and some other districts of Kerala between June 17 and 20.

After sweltering heat of summer, start of rain gives us cheer and relaxation. Continuous and noisy rain outside, and inside the house, tea, pakoda or bajya to taste gives us the feeling of calmness to mind and heart. Finally, DK and Udupi, got wet, cool and pleasant days.

I was brought up in Kelmbet, where I could see the peacock in the forest dance during the rain. Nearby the small hill, we used to enjoy the sight of rainbow. In front of my house, were many large fields, where I could see large number of women planting the paddy with their country songs. Today, I see the fields are ploughed by tractor and not a single woman can be seen in the fields. The village thrill and excitement of yesterdays are no more in our DK and Udipi. A stage has come among our people, a farmer boy finds very hard to get a girl for marriage, since all girls are well educated and want to settle in cities.

In this year of pandemic where most of the people are in distress the timely arrival of monsoon is a blessing from God above. Hope more and more people will engage themselves in doing agriculture this year as jobs are virtually non existent and growing food and simple lifestyle is only way forward.

Pinto Sir.... Yes. Meri man ki baat aapne bhi kahi he.......we should not depend on markets and all.... Necessary things should be grown in our compounds, terrace or balcony.... Organic one without fertiliser...... Because of the less pollution, this time weather also very cool after the first rain itself. It looks like nature has put open-air AC for all.... God bless our nature 😍😍🙏🙏
