15,000 more people expected to arrive in Udupi from Mumbai shortly

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jun 4: The district is losing its claim to being one of the safest havens and being home to tranquillity and relaxed lifestyle. The district's transformation and slide from being corona-free to being one of the leading districts in the state as far as corona infection is concerned really tragic. People are worried about how to accommodate infected people if their number crosses a thousand mark as arranging for beds and medical facilities round the clock is a mammoth challenge.

The number of people infected with coronavirus in the district is rapidly rising. Coronavirus patients are currently being treated at the government hospitals in Kundapur and Karkala and Dr TMA Pai Hospital in the city. The number of infected persons exceeds the bed capacity of these three hospitals put together.

Throat swab sample reports of many are awaited. Once these reports come out, the number of infected is bound to rise.

A worrying issue is that many infected persons have been placed under home quarantine before the receipt of their test reports. There is a risk of their family members contracting the infection. If elderly people and young children get infected, their condition can turn really serious.

Maharashtra has delivered a big blow to the district, with about 90 per cent of the infected people coming from that state. In the second phase, over 15,000 people are waiting to return to this district. Preparations have to be made to receive them but there is absolutely no clue how so many will be accommodated in quarantine centres here. Deputy commissioner of the district G Jagadeesha has said that Kundapur taluk hospital would be shifted to Kota and the current bed capacity at Kundapur would be expended from 120 to 200 to convert it into complete COVID hospital. He also proposed to turn Adarsha Hospital (65 beds), and Lalitambika Guest House, Kollur into full-fledged COVID hospitals so that availability of beds in the two taluks will rise to 400. He says that arrangements have been made to see that there is no shortage of beds.

Those who came in during May first week were accommodated in schools, colleges, and hostels. But with SSLC examinations underway from June 25, and as preparations are in full swing, accommodating people in these institutions is not possible.

I urge the local representatives to raise this issue to handle it better before things go out of control.

We are not against our people coming back to native. Please regulate their travel so that proper safety measures are in place and it does not go for community transmission.

As we are concerned about our Mumbai residents coming back we are equally concerned about elderly and kids living in our area. If they are infected and their health situation become serious and there are insufficient health care facilities who is responsible??

I urge District authorities to publish the plan before hand on how they will handle the situation. We have the right to know this.

As rightly we are not saying people from Mumbai should not return but the present reporting of cases returning from Maharashtra to Udupi and Mangalore district might cause overload on medical facilities in Udupi and Mangalore districts. I think people coming from highly affected states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamilnadu and Delhi entries should be restricted temporarily for say 1 month so that things come under control.Otherwise situation might go out of control. Authorities are silent about restricting entries of people from Maharashtra .

Thanks B. S. Yediyurappa, K Sudhakar & their team. Karnataka does not have community transmission.

Every Corona virus transmission is controlled & within relatives or Neighbours if any.
When compared to Maharashtra or Delhi... I am proud of Karnataka handling of Covid-19..

Districts like Udupi maintained ZERO new cases status for 1.5 months in march last week to May 1st week.

It is only because of Imported cases, we are seeing increase in Covid-19 cases. But, that is also contained with Institutional Quarantine OR Home Quarantine

At such a critical situation when the transmission is flaring up like anything; Udipi will be overwhelmed!
Now, the intellectuals say we will have to live with the virus.

WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF ALL THIS UNPLANNED SOCIAL DISTANCING, MASKING, BREAKDOWN ETC ETC; it's NULL & VOID???

They may be actually infected people. Because very poor facility for Covid Patients in Bombay, patients are coming to Karnataka. Unfortunately Karnataka is welcoming them with open hands saying that they of Krnataka origin. May be they are of Karnataka origin. But insist on a test before even boarding buses or trains. Otherwise, Udipi and Dakshina Kannada will turn into Bombay.

Are there enough Beds for 15,000 people - Separate from existing patients & hospital facility?

If they come to some place, like Near your Home for Home Quarantine, Your Area will be sealed down for 3 weeks.
You can't go to Work or Grocery shop for 3 weeks or for a Month...

    Are you OK with that?

Main reasons for the virus spread

    1. People travelling by buses, trains from Mumbai to Karnataka
    2. The authorities make people wait in lines for more than 4 to 5 hours in state and district borders to fill the forms. I don't understand what is the need of filling forms when you have already got the online pass and the government has all data with them.
    3. Putting people in single large room and make them use common toilet and bathrooms
    4. People flouting home quarantine norms.

I am sure most the people contacted the virus after they left their homes in Bombay because of incapability of handing situation by authorities. It is difficult to believe that everyone had the virus before leaving their homes in Mumbai.

Home quarantine is the better option. Government should put some conditions for home quarantine

    1. The house should be vacant
    2. Get the consent from neighbours so they can alert police if anyone try to break the rules while in home quarantine and file case against them
    3. If no consent from neighbour then no home quarantine

Must that student lose a year of their studies, for no fault of theirs, because of political decision of allowing migrants? Will the politicians be responsible for that students fate?

Result of poorly planned national curfew ...
Modi announced a national curfew with little notice. He addressed India at 8 pm, and the curfew came into force at midnight. Just like demonetisation. Why couldn’t he have given some notice? Why couldn’t he have done his TV address at 8 am? Maximising prime time attention, you see. The consequences are emerging one by one. We’ll be left with the great Indian discovery, the zero.
