Mangaluru: City buses fail to comply with social distancing rule

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 2: The private buses which had fallen silent about two and half months back in both Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts do handle coronavirus crisis, partially began operations on Monday June 1. Except a few buses in the early hours and again in the late evenings, the number of passengers using the bus facility was very less.

The buses can carry only 50 percent of their passenger capacity to maintain social distance. Each bus is allowed between 30 and 35 passengers to get seated and every bus was sanitized at the end of every trip. The passengers were provided with sanitizers and those not wearing masks were refused entry into buses.

However, in the early morning and late evening, a few city buses were found to be packed with passengers. Even though the buses can carry only 50 percent of passengers, because of shortage of buses, passengers were seen standing very close to each other in a few buses.

I have found that the KSRTC buses are strictly following the guidelines. It is time for the District to introduce KSRTC buses due to the inability of the Bus owners to follow the SOP laid by the Government.

The discipline and initiative to follow social distancing should come from within and then only it help in combating COVID 19. People often are self centered and do not care for other and have civic sense..This may be because of lack of education and bad parenting. Under the circumstances enforcing discipline should be done through with the help of Police and rendering harsh punishment for the wrong doers.

Buses first need to comply with basic safety and comfort guidelines. They still utilize age old method of spreading tarpaulin or rugs to protect passengers during rain. Are these even better than glass windows? These surely do not meet standards. No one even bothers to check for compliance in this case.

Social distancing is literally not possible in city buses operating in DK due to two reasons,
    * A lot of people in the city depend on buses to travel. Given the number of buses being operated even if 50% of the people travel by buses it's not possible to accomodate everyone even if buses are operated at full capacity.
    * Given the relative small size of the city everybody chooses to travel at the last minute possible to reach on time. Given the number of people thinking similarly nobody will want to miss their bus and be late to their destination. Also a lot of offices follow the same timings to operate. If the govt can choose few sectors of business and alott timings to operate we can eliminate the peak hour traffic and thus fulfilling the required conditions to travel via public transport.

People have to make changes, you can't expect everything to be handled by the bus operators and the district administration.

It is expected. Leave social distance alone. Previously they used to ignore everything and with their own whim and fancy they used to function.

Social Distancing maintain by people themselves. Do it work in over populated country. Shortage of buses around. If go on distancing..will stand during breakfast and reach at night during dinner. Our life now becomes same like in 'maut ka kuwa'.

Sir, by this, can we achieve "Herd Immunity" ? Lock down is not the solution in containing this virus.... Lock down opened... Now we can't blame for relaxation of lock down if we succeed in getting herd immunity...

Cynthia, herd immunity is still a long way away- and to achieve it, atleast 60% of the population has to get infected. We’re a country of 1.3 billion. The mortality rate is around 2.5%.
    Do the math.
Are you willing to potentially lose members of your family who’re over 65 inorder to gain herd immunity??

    Tue, Jun 02 2020

No... No one wants to lose any one either from family or from neighbourhood.... Exactly..i too said the same thing in the past when some of our commentators were saying about herd immunity.....and lock down is not the solution... They have given the examples of other countries how they got success through herd immunity... I too opined that time, herd immunity is not possible in India as we have vast population... It's possible only with little population and with good environment /funds etc etc.. In herd immunity people are divided. Young ones with immunity are allowed to move outside whereas elderly people/children/people with other diseases with low immunity are kept at home... It's not possible here...

Rules every body must follow. Here if bus owners started the service and not maintaining the norms , why the passengers are not following the rules ?????? If there is no social distence in the bus, than don't enter the bus or get down from the bus. If passengers follow the rules, automatically we can contro the situation . What our DC and representative doing ???. I think if everything normal than no problem. But if Corona virus spreads, than gone case

The buses are plying with one or two passengers in daytime and go full in some routes in morning and evening. Hope the bus owners association will plan more trips during the peak hours to meet the demand and maintain social distancing

I just want to ask the president of the bus owners, what is your reaction to the overloading of buses.Every action must have a suitable reaction,i think charge the nominal charges, pay what is due to the government, why do you want all facilities when you can't think of the public safety.
