Mangaluru/Udupi, May 24: Strict implementation of the lockdown was seen in most parts of Mangaluru and Udupi on Sunday, May 24 and the city wore a deserted look despite the festive occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. Most of the roads were clear and only the vehicles transporting essentials were seen moving around.
Muslim community across the world is celebrating the holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr on Sunday.
In the city also, Muslims celebrate this festival in a grand manner. Thousands of people gather at the Eidgah masjid at Bavutagudda to offer namaz as part of the festivity. However, this year the masjid and nearby areas wear a deserted look as there is lockdown restriction due to Covid-coronavirus pandemic. Also Sunday is a total lockdown day as announced by the state government, which bans even private vehicles from plying on the road.

Prime Minister Modi announced lockdown from March 22 in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Though there are some relaxations in the lockdown 4.0 announced a week ago, religious places are still prohibited for public entrance and offering of prayers in groups.
On Saturday, May 23, the state of Karnataka recorded the highest number of Covid-19 infections crossing the 200 mark. In total 216 cases of infections were reported in the state. In the district of Dakshina Kannada two more people reported positive for coronavirus infection on Saturday.
The total number of cases of Covid-19 infection in the state has risen to 1,959 and death toll has touched 42.
