Lockdown has not yielded results: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, May 22 (IANS): Speaking in the opposition meeting attended by 22 parties, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that the COVID-19 lockdown has not yielded results.

"We had two motives of the lockdown - to contain the disease and curb its spread but the infection is increasing," Rahul Gandhi said adding "Today the infection is increasing but we are lifting the lockdown this means the lockdown which was implemented without thought is not giving correct results."

"Lockdown has created huge loss to crores of people " he said.

But the government is not helping them neither putting Rs 7,500 cash into their accounts, if they are not provided with rations, if migrants and MSME workers are not helped it will be catastrophe.

"We do not accept the package, people do not want loan but assistance, our responsibility is to raise our voice this is for the country not parties. If nothing is done crores of people will be pushed into poverty," he said.

Earlier Sonia Gandhi in her remarks launched a scathing attack and said that the spirit of federalism has been forgotten.

"The government has also abandoned any pretence of being a democratic government. All power is now concentrated in one office, the PMO. The spirit of federalism which is an integral part of our Constitution is all but forgotten. There is no indication either if the two Houses of Parliament or the Standing Committees will be summoned to meet."

This government has handled the situation in completely unscientific way.

Airport Screening was delayed, Lockdown was declared late and that too all of a sudden. Government preparation are inadequate, testing is done on very small sample, no effort was taken to increase it. There have been number of asymptomatic cases which could not be detected and they carried the virus everywhere. Actual number of Corona positive cases may be much higher because testing is done only on symptomatic people.

Migrant issue was not handled at all and now these people have walked thousands of kilometers and some of them carrying virus with them. Now it has become uncontrollable and this is due to delayed actions.

All those people who are responsible for the delayed actions need to be brought to the book.

LOCKDOWN has created more hardships to all people specially migrant labourers than benefits. It is a unilateral decision with out considering prospects and consequences and without suggestions from States and Professionals!!! Are we genuinely heading for 5 Trillion ECONOMY???

Agree . Sudden Lock down with no consultation with chief ministers of states& economic advisors resulted in major disruption of economy, Crores of poor workers with infections all over India ,stranded without transportation,food/shelter walking bare foot to reach their homes,.This spiraling of Covid cases could have been avoided with proper steps before implementing sudden lockdown but too late.

In a democracy consultation with the opposition on national calamities, war, and pandemic is basic Raj Dharma. This lesson is still not learnt by the Government at the Centre. All the time the PMO is trying to display that they have wisdom which others do not have. Their unilateral decisions end up with catastrophic results.

very sad. this guy has no sense... not sure why congress is making him their leader.
not sure why they appoint a negative leader... we have lockdown in UAE... its required to contain the problem....

lock down will kill more people than `covid... in terms of being broke...no money to eat...business shut down... but its required to save the rest..

so the while voting, pls think.. at times like there negativity is not appreciated.
