Porvorim, Feb 6: Panchayat minister, Mauvin Godinho has called for a check over the increase in number of gaddas (food carts/kiosks) in villages as he suspects they are associated with the sale of drugs. Godinho believes that the gaddas are operated by anti-social elements.

"Some gaddas even sell drugs — you can verify with the police. They are operated by goons," Godinho said.

According to the minister, as many as 95 per cent of the gaddas are rented by the Goans for the outsiders without conducting proper checks.

The panchayat minister said he would introduce a policy within three months, to crackdown on gaddas indulging in illegal activities, and also shabby-looking kiosks that 'spoil the image of the state.'

“A hawkers' zone needs to be created and the gaddas should be made uniform in design,” Godinho said.
