Puttur, Sep 16: A three-year-old female child had died after falling down from a moving auto rickshaw at Mogappe within Koltige village in the taluk. This incident had happened two weeks back.

The police, who have registered Suo Moto case relating to the child's demise, are learnt to have exhumed the buried mortal remains of the child on Friday and conducted inquest procedure.

Devika (3), daughter of Kushalapa Gowda and Prema couple from Barike in Koltige village in the taluk had lost her life in the accident. Prema had taken her daughter, Devika, who was suffering from fever, and the daughter of her sister on September 1 to a clinic at Bellare. When returning after obtaining medicines for the child in an auto rickshaw the catastrophe which happened at Mogappe had claimed the life of the child.

Devika, who was seated on the side seat of the auto rickshaw had accidentally fallen from the rickshaw and injured. The girl, who was in a critical condition, was taken to a hospital at Bellare for treatment in the same auto rickshaw for treatment. But by then the child was no more. As the parents felt that the auto rickshaw driver was not to blame for the incident, and also in view of it being an accident, informed the police but did not file official complaint.

After the incident got publicity through the media, district superintendent of police instructed the Bellare police to follow procedure. The police therefore conducted inquest of the body and began to probe the entire episode.

Puttur taluk magistrate and tahsildar Anantha Shankar, officer of the taluk office Nagesh, Koltige village accountant Shabbir, and others were present when Bellare police sub-inspector Erayya, led a team of police who removed the body in the presence of the girl's parents and performed inquest on the spot. Doctors from Deralakatte performed post-mortem after which the body was buried at the same spot.

It is learnt that the police also obtained statements from the auto rickshaw driver and parents of the deceased girl. During the process, the policemen came to the conclusion that it was not a purposeful incident. A case of unnatural death was registered and investigation will be conducted further, the police said.

It is indeed a sad episode in the life and history of a child. What is good to note is the fact that no one blames the autorikshaw driver. However the Police have moved the court for investigation. Hope the auto driver will not be booked against the verdict of all concerned.
