Madikeri: Heavy rain prediction - Kodagu haunted by chilling memories

Madikeri, Jul 18: People of Kodagu district, who were devastated by heavy rain that had unleashed its fury in the district during last year, which had resulted in high magnitude destruction of property and loss of lives, have become fearful again as the meteorological department as sounded orange alert and predicted heavy rain for five days. The department has predicted heavy rainfall from July 18 to 22.

Officials of Karnataka Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell have predicted rainfall of between 115 to 204 mm in Kodagu district. The people have been asked to be on high alert. Orange colour denotes seriousness of dangers posed by natural disasters, with green, yellow and red being the other colours. Green alert is issued when the possibility of rainfall during 24 hour period is within 30 mm. Yellow alert is issued for rainfall of 30 to 50 mm during 24 hour period when the situation can turn for the worse in a couple of days. Orange alert refers to rainfall of between 50 to 70 mm in 24 hours. As the situation can affect road and railway transport and power supply, people have to be take steps to protect themselves and their property. Over 70 mm of rainfall in a day is represented by red alert.
