11 schools face closure due to lack of admissions in DK, Udupi districts

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SHP)

Mangaluru, Jun 26: After over 1,000 schools were shut down in Odisha due to lack of students, schools in the coastal region here in the state are being shut down as well. Sources state that over 11 schools have been asked to shut down. Owing to lack of enrolment of students for the academic year, four schools in Dakshina Kannada and seven schools in Udupi are being closed down.

The teachers of the respective schools have been transferred elsewhere. A school in Sullia which opened recently after it was closed down, had only one admission this year. The school is in the Kemanaballi village of Sullia and had first opened in 1965, is now shut down for an indefinite term.

According to reports, Bantwal had the highest number of schools which were closed down. The schools were functioning and escaping the closure only because of the labourers managed to enrol their kids.

There have been documented cases where the school was in session even with six students in the 1st grade to the 5th grade. The government then considered it wise to shut the schools and shift the kids and the teachers to nearby institutions.

The DDPI of Dakshina Kannada, Y Shivaramaiah, said that officials are trying to find ways and means to save Shirnakal aided school in Bantwal. He also expressed concern over the closing down of two government and one aided school for the present academic year.

In DK and Udipi, schools are being closed since parents do not want their children to study in Kannada medium. A plethora of English medium schools are brimming with students.

Kerala also closed many schools, not because parents do not want to send their children to Malayali schools, but there are no sufficient children to enroll. Less children are born in Kerala now, since, most of the couples of child bearing age, are outside the state or country, and producing their children there.
