Mangaluru, Jun 22: Cases of Malaria and Dengue are on the increase in the district. About 70% of malaria cases in the state are reported from Mangaluru.

District health department and Mangaluru corporation has taken sufficient measures for prevention of epidemics. But they have not been able to control malaria and dengue.

As many as 494 cases of malaria are reported in the district since January this year. Most of them are from Mangaluru. A total of 470 Malaria cases have come to light in corporation limits. As many as 16 cases are identified in Mangaluru taluk, four in Bantwal and two cases each in Puttur and Belthangady. No cases are reported from Sullia.

The team of Mangaluru health department had conducted a survey in more than 300 houses of Mahakalipadpu and Emmekere. Thirty people were found suffering from fever in Mahakalipadpu alone. Eighteen of them had symptoms of Dengue and Dengue was confirmed among four among them.

A mobile anti-malaria unit will work in Mangaluru for 24 hours in a day. The unit will come home and take blood samples for tests. Free medical treatment also is provided. Mosquitoes are the main cause for the spread of epidemics. “We should clean our environment to make sure that mosquitoes do not multiply. Mosquitoes are more in Mangaluru,” said Dakshina Kannada district health officer Dr Ramakrishna Rao.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE. It is expedient that possible care is taken by authorities concerned and also talks are given in schools and colleges and in places frequented by people regarding mosquito menace. .

People should also be advised to have mosquito - proof shutters in their respective residences.
