Mangaluru, Jun 22: Dr Rajesh Bhat, a well-known obstetrician and gynaecologist of Bhat's Nursing Home at Gandhinagar, Mannagudda here, passed away after collapsing when participating in badminton tournament at Mangala Stadium here on Saturday, June 22. He was 48.

Dr Rajesh was the son of the late Dr Malathi Bhat, who was also a renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist. When playing, he suffered massive heart attack and collapsed. He was rushed to A J Hospital. In spite of their best efforts, the doctors could not save his life.

Dr Bhat was the full time working partner of Bhat's Nursing Home. He is survived by wife, Dr Veena Bhat, and family members.

After securing MBBS degree in 1995, Dr Bhat went on to complete DGO course in 1998 from Kasturba Medical College here. He worked for some time at K S Hegde Medical Academy before joining Bhat's Nursing Home run by his mother. He had undergone training in gynaecological endoscopic surgeries.

As a consequence of this shocking incident, the badminton tournament, 'Mangalore Premium League', stands cancelled.

Heartfelt condolences to Dr Veena and family.

Rajesh and I were classmates at St Aloysius Pri/Middle/High School, Mangalore. He was a jovial person, and brought much joy to our group. I fondly remember the evening rides/drives our group used to take to Kadri Park/Tannirbavi and then for refreshments -- and all the conversations that went with it. After completing schooling and everyone dispersed for higher studies or work, "Bhatre", being in Mangalore was sort of an anchor. When I used to visit Mangalore once in a couple of years, Dr Rajesh and Mahesh PN always made it a point to meet and have me over for dinner. It is something I always saw as a blessing and I continue to cherish those moments. Our group is that much lesser with the passing of Dr Bhat. I pray that God grant him eternal rest and comfort his family during this time of grief.

I also offer my condolences to all my classmates and friends who were close to Rajesh "Bhatre". May God comfort you too during this time.

    United with you in grief,
    Joe Coelho SJ
