Mangaluru, Jun 22: A protest was held in the leadership of Harekala Nagarika Horata Samithi on Friday urging for immediate closure of newly opened liquor shop at Gramachavadi in Harekala gram panchayat limits.

Zahid Malar of the Nagarika Samithi addressing the protesters said that Gramachavadi is the place that joins three villages and two taluks. “People here are living in harmony. There is also an educational institute in the building where the liquor shop is opened. The liquor shop has obtained licence with the help excise department. If the shop is not closed, we will close it ourselves,” he warned.

Rafiq Harekala said that the illegal liquor shop was opened without obtaining permission from local gram panchayat. “There is a school, training centre of tailoring for women, religious centres and houses in the vicinity. Local people are anxious that several problems will be created if the liquor outlet is allowed to function. As most of the people in Harekala are poor and working on daily wages, women are worried that the men may become alcohol addicts and their families will be driven to streets.”

“There is a law that liquor shops should not be situated close to centres of education but such conditions are ignored in the case of this illegal liquor shop. Therefore, it should be closed at any cost,” he urged.

The committee members later submitted a memorandum to Harekala gram panchayat president. Though police security was tight, anguished local people gheroed the liquor shop and locked it.

Bashir B M, Naufal, Shahul Hameed, Muneer, Ismail and others participated in the protest.

Konaje police officials and excise department officials were present.

I think this is wrong! Exactly opposite to this shop there's a toddy shop present and panchyath has given the permission to them! Then why not liquor shop? I think in that area there's a need of liquor shop. The people who need to drink liquor should travel for kilometers. And if they have the license they can't protest against it for closure! And the people who protest shouldn't enter the private property. Strict action should be taken for crossing the limits during the protest.

Here people talking about law, legal.... etc. But why the same law is not remembered during cowtheft. Every day we are reading cow theft case that also from poor peoples hut by threating them with sword etc. but no one protesting? instead indirectly supported in the name of freedom of food. My humble request, everyone should protest against all illegal activity & there should not be any partiality.

Alcohol should be allowed for sale. It is the individual who is responsible for its consumption. Some people want to relax after a hard day's work, some want to enjoy a celebration, some want to drink for health reasons, some want to drink for socializing with friends - whatever the case, alcohol should not be banned. If some women say that their husbands may start drinking, they are wrong. They must be secretly drinking toxic alcohol sold illegally. Better to drink from Excise authorized shops and live longer. Liquor shops are similar to fast food outlets like KFC, Mac Donald's, Pizza shops, local food stalls. Even these fast food outlets make people obese. Does that mean it should be closed. It is the individual who is responsible for its consumption.

If it is not bar, but only liquor shop and the liquor shop has adhered to all the norms and rules, then, this shop can be opened. If rules & norms are not followed, then the liquor shop should be closed.

    I agree with you Sir.
Imagine the plight of poor locals. They have to travel all the way to Asaigoli or Deralakatte to have a peg after work. They will be spending extra for transportation to and fro.
A liquor shop in the vicinity could save all these extra losses.
Drunkards will drink even if the liquor shop is 50 miles away.

Oh oh what a concern! In order to save the villagers money, wine shop opened at asaigoli is it Shankar sir?? Bar owner never thought of his profit right?) When you know they need a peg after the work then don't take pegs money.. give them pegs in charity as such they take so much trouble to go there to buy that Satan's urine from asaigoli to deralakatte in just five rupees... Let them go by bus and get everyday..five rupees not a big amount. When you work hard in the evening after food automatically get sleep no need of depending on alcohol then speak in abusive language, beat the children and wife and setting bad example for growing children in the family. Instead let him carry fruits/good items for his food etc

What sensitive .... How come a liquor shop be a sensitive issue .... it got nothing to do with sensitivity ....
If the liquor shop got valid permits and it is within the range out of schools, Mandir-Masjid and highway limits .... What is the problem ???
Seems like the protest got some communal intention ....

What is sensitive. In Dubai, some hyper market sell pork meat officially and no body bothers about it. In United Arab Emirates, one of the Emirates Ajman, openly sells liquor and one will surprised to see, who are buying liquor in those shops.
India is a democratic Country and if it is within the rules of the land, then it should be allowed. It cannot be one way traffic, like cow lynching,
