Mangaluru, Jun 1: The ninth graduation day of St Aloysius College was celebrated with a grand ceremony at Loyola Hall, St Aloysius PU College campus here on Saturday, June 1.

As many as 1,982 students graduated from St Aloysius College, among which 1,101 students were from undergraduate, 756 from post-graduate and 125 from diploma courses.

Addressing the gathering, Christ College (Bengaluru) former vice-chancellor Dr Thomas C Mathew said, "I am delighted to be a part of the graduation ceremony of this great institution with a legacy of 137 years. This institution is like a lighthouse that guides its alumni to shine and enkindle, like its motto. St Aloysius College, through its existence of more than a century and three decades, has transformed generations to build a more just and responsible society.

"A ship is safe in a harbour. But the ship is not designed to be in the harbour. Today you Aloysians will cross the portals of this institution one last time to a wider and less protective world outside, a world you belong to and the world your alma mater, your parents and well wishes have prepared you for," he told the students.

"You are graduating not into a brave new world but a disruptive world shaped by the age of urbanization, accelerating technological changes, challenges of an aging and greater global connections. This disruption is rapidly creating skill gaps which we need to bridge through a continuous process of learning. Beyond skills, it is important to nurture the values of integrity and democracy so that life becomes meaningful," Mathew added.

Provincial of Karnataka Jesuit province Dr Stanislaus D’Souza said, "Convocation is a time to celebrate the opportunities that you have utilized. You need to thank everyone who stood beside you. Your graduation will help you become effective and efficient in the world outside."

St Aloysius Institutions rector Fr Dionysius Vaz administered the oath to the students.

St Aloysius College principal Dr Praveen Martis welcomed the gathering.
