Concrete measures needed to curb child abuse at Church, says Pope Francis

Vatican City, Feb 21 (IANS): Pope Francis said here on Thursday the world was waiting not only for the Catholic Church to condemn child sexual abuse by members of clergy but also for "concrete measures" to eradicate it.

The head of the Church said this in his speech at the start of a four-day summit, which is aimed at tackling the child sexual abuse within the institution.

The summit -- "The Protection of Minors in the Church" -- is being attended by the heads of all national bishops' conferences from over 130 countries, the BBC reported.

Details of sexual abuse have emerged across the world and the Church has been accused of covering up crimes.

"The holy people of God are watching and waiting not for simple and obvious condemnations but concrete and efficient measures," the Pontiff told 190 representatives of the ecclesiastical hierarchy which gathered at the Holy See for the meeting.

The Pope said he wanted to consult those gathered in the Vatican, which included patriarchs, cardinals, archbishops and bishops, "in the face of the plague of sexual abuse perpetrated by men of the Church against children".

He hoped the gathering would allow them to "hear the cry of the little ones who ask for justice", Efe news reported.

The Pope said those present at the summit bore a pastoral and ecclesial responsibility to discuss how to confront the "evil" of abuse at the hands of the clergy.

Participants would be given some guidelines to aid them in their reflections on the issue, which would act as a starting point, he added.

As part of his address, the Pontiff called on the Holy Spirit to help the Church over the coming days to transform the "evil" of abuse into an opportunity for its members to take stock of the situation.

The summit began with priest Hans Zollner, one of the members of the organising committee and an expert in the fight against abuse, reading the words of a victim of abuse: "Neither my parents nor the ecclesiastical authorities heard my cry. Did God not hear it either?"

Pope Francis called for "decisive action" on the issue when he was elected in 2013, but critics say he has not done enough to hold to account bishops who allegedly covered up abuse.

Some groups of survivors voiced scepticism that any concrete action will be taken during the event, calling it a "publicity stunt" to cleanse the image of the Church.

The problem can only be solved when Vatican gets a grip of the problems on hand. Less than 4% of the sex abuse involves minors. The problem in the presence homosexual elements in the ranks of the clergy who have disregarded their oath of celibacy. That many believe that these persons have been planted by communists is a moot point. The issue that has to be dealt with is resolving the problem once and for all and to avoid causes that may result in recurrence of abuse. When caught sometimes the defenders of these monsters argue that relationship was consensual.
    The real issues are:
1.) Breaking the vow of Celibacy.
2.) Luring of seminarians and lay faithful who are subordinate and thus exercising coercion in starting and continuing relations ships.
3.) Homosexuality among clergy. Less than 10% of the sex abuse of clergy involves minors or women as victims. 90% of the victims are homosexual. It is said that less than 20% of clergy is homosexual. If this 20% is involved in 90% of the abuse there you have the problem that needs to be addressed.

Child abuse is not the lone evil in the clergy - please address children fathered by the priestly order. Because, those who do this are supposed to have taken vow of celibacy. If the Catholic Church has provision to bear children by the clergy, then 'child sex abuse' is taken for granted by the very clergy. Ask any youth who is a result of such provision - they don't feel proud about their existence in this world. They feel humiliation and shame at their birth.

These two problems should be addressed together because they are closely related as close as two wheels of a cart.

    Dinshyam,

The Church administration never denied the abuse - it was always was an issue of discussion and admission. Also, of compensation to the victims. Its not just Pope Francis, all previous heads of Catholic Church adhered to it but since the problems is not limited to just one country - its universal - the matter gets tougher to handle. But, matters are openly discussed and solutions sought.

Haven't we seen abuses in India by non-Christian priestly members ? Is there a control over a Guru or Baba carrying out such deeds ? Therefore, please do not laugh at others' cost, if you can be empathetic towards the victims than vying for a chance to smack.

If you are so confident on your view..why did comments not crossing more than ten. If same happened with any other religious leaders it cross more than 200. First try to define yourself by one and all..than comment on other's mistakes. By hiding one's fault..nowhere reach by any means. One or other day wants to stand in front of god..for wrong-doing. Our people at least in prison. How about your people. By giving only money to victims...can escape easily..?? You are moreover defending your religion.

    Dinshyam,

Please take some time and to back to as many abuse reports as you want, where I commented. My demand is same everywhere irrespective of community - please disrobe yourself if you want to be a family man, don't contain two faces - one for display, one behind the curtain.

That should help to understand if people are biased or unbiased in expressing their opinion. Well, I can speak about myself, I can't vouch for others.

@ Dinshyam, Deralakatte: The RC church is governed and headed by the Pope.. when the pope (current and past) have never denied child abuse cases its the first step. Abuse is grave sin, Only the victim and god knows how they feel after... the fact that the church openly agrees that such cases are happening is a sign that there is someone in the church who will listen to such victims and act on it.

Now lets look at other cases where anyone and everyone claims to be a godman... who controls these ?? Look at each of the godmen who are behind bars today, they are individuals who claimed to be the head of whatever sangh or Mutt or some even claiming to be incarnation of god... what you have seen being arrested is only the tip of the iceberg my frnd... But then since these are all ungoverned godmen who dont have any one they report to or (or so they think) who takes the accountability and agree that there are such abuse cases within the Mutts?? NO ONE..... Thats the difference you dont see...
