Mangaluru, Feb 18: ‘Ranga Habba – 2019’, a four-day theatre festival began at the open stage of Padua College in the city on Sunday, February 17.
Leslie Rego, well-known drama artiste, entrepreneur and master of ceremony inaugurated the festival with the sound of ‘Nagari’, a percussion instrument.
In his inaugural speech Leslie said, “Based on the changes of human thinking and society, the form of drama also went through various changes. It transformed traditional to modern and still the process of changes and innovations is going on. It is very much required and the audience is also more enthusiastic about this process. It is very happy to know about Ranga Habba celebration. I congratulate Astitva and all its members. Hope this festival will help to know about the dramas of various languages in the form of entertainment and a study.”
Welcoming the gathering, Fr Alwin Serrao said, “’Ranga Habba – 2019’ is the brainchild of Christopher of Astitva. He took initiative and made all arrangements for the drama festival. Nowadays, it is very difficult to organize a drama. But because of the difficulties, we cannot stop the shows of drama and cannot discourage the writers and actors. In ‘Ranga Habba -2019’, we are not only showing the dramas but also trying to introduce the artistes who work behind the screens. We know that everyone hails the actors, director and writer after the show. But the efforts of those, who work behind the screens goes unnoticed. But in this festival, we are going to bring them to the stage.”
Hilda Premavathi Rayanna, costume designer, who designs consumes for dramas from many years was felicitated on the occasion. Sadashiva Rao Arehole Pratistana rendered the vote of thanks.
After the inaugural Konkani play ‘Salgi’ was presented to the audience. This play is written by Fr Alwin Serrao, directed by Christopher Ninasam and Clanwin Kalaakul and produced by the Logos Theatre Troop.
On February 18, Udupi Sangama Kalavidaru will stage, ‘We Teach Life Sir’, a play in Kannada, directed by Prashanth Udyavar.
A Tulu play based on the novel ‘A Train to Pakistan’, written by Kushwanth Singh, translated into Kannada by Dr M B Rammurthi is converted into a play and directed by Santhosh Nayak Patla, will be performed on February 19.
On February 20, Nada Maninalkuru will be singing the poems of love and life of various Kannada poets to the tune of tambourine. This programme is named ‘Kathala Hadu’.
The entry to the programme is free and on all the days the programme will commence sharp at 6 pm.
