Modi turning India into surveillance state: Congress on snooping

New Delhi, Dec 21 (IANS): The Congress on Friday accused the Narendra Modi government of turning India into a "surveillance state" over its order to put all computers under the watch of intelligence and investigating agencies, and said it was a direct assault on the fundamental right to privacy.

Addressing the media here, Congress leader and former Union Minister Anand Sharma said the government's move was unacceptable and the opposition will collectively raise the issue in Parliament.

"This is a very serious development, through this order the Modi government is turning India into a surveillance state.

"It is the ultimate assault on the fundamental right to privacy and is in direct conflict with the Supreme Court's order, which held right to privacy as a fundamental right," said Sharma.

He also claimed that a host of people including Supreme Court and High Court judges and politicians' phones were being tapped.

"We have raised the issue several times in Parliament that a large number of people, including politicians, judges, MPs and top government officials' phones were being tapped by the government.

"The latest order of putting all computers under surveillance is unacceptable in any democracy and we collectively oppose it. The opposition will unitedly raise this issue in Parliament.

"But as this government is unwilling to do, that is why it is not allowing Parliament to function," added Sharma.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala also attacked the Modi government over the issue.

"Modi government mocks and flouts the fundamental right to privacy with brazen impunity. Having lost elections, now wants to scan and snoop your computers. 'Big Brother Syndrome' is truly embedded in NDA's DNA," said Surjewala.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday issued an order giving 10 central agencies, including the CBI, the ED and the Delhi Police to "intercept, monitor and decrypt any information generated, transmitted, received or stored in any computer".

Only anti nationals, terrorists, Maoists both urban n rural have something to hide. If you are not doing any illegal, anti social or anti national why should you worry. Every country has this. Many countries have face recognition technology where citizens are tracked 24/7. That will be next.

BJP crossing all limits and lines. First it was snooping on fridges, kitchen, bedrooms and toilets. Then it was in personal and personal choices and family matters and eating choices. On top of that moral police were unleashed to supervise. Now into the computers and personal Infos. Regarding security of the country there is already a system in place. BJP doesn't have to snoop in all 100 crores Indians computers with a security cover up reason. This is Demonitisation 2 to stand in bank queues. Only one thing emerges from this is a A very insecure BJP. Never happened in 70 years for security of the country. Even in World war 2 Hitler did not search house to house individual by individual. If so then BJP is another Hitler.

Before 2014 congress even did Demonetisation, note ban and surgical strikes but nobody felt any effect nor people were singled out and bashed under the guise of any act. In fact country was safe and economically progressing. But BJP using all these issues for its selfish ulterior motive and using UPA policies as a shield.

Your point has been clearly answered but unfortunately you are blind in eyes and brain. When this act was brought in by congress in 2009 how many innocent citizens were tortured who were against congress. You are using this just like you use CBI, ED, EC , police and judiciary for your ulterior motive. It's not national security but you want classified info of opposition and strategy.
