Turkey supports UN plan for new Syria constitution

Ankara, Dec 18 (IANS): Turkey supports an expected UN plan to form a Syrian constitutional committee and rewrite the country's constitution, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Tuesday.

Speaking to lawmakers at Turkish Parliament, Cavusoglu said Turkey has opened a final window of opportunity for a political solution over Syria issues, Xinhua news agency reported.

Cavusoglu reiterated determination to fight against Kurdish rebels in Syria, including the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) and its Syrian wing the People's Protection Units (YPG), following Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's warnings to launch new batch of military operation in northern Syria.

Turkey, Iran and Russia diplomats gathered in Geneva on Monday for the talks at the UN, hosted by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, regarding the formation of the Syrian constitution.

The Syrian constitutional committee is expected to have 150 members from both the Syrian government and opposition.
