Puttur: Gang of women fleecing men held

Puttur, Nov 15: The personnel of Uppinangady police station have succeeded in busting a racket of women which used to gain entry into the houses inhabited by single men and somehow rob their gold ornaments and cash by diverting their attention.

The arrested persons are Devamma (19), wife of Pavan Raj from Bovvanur, Hadagali, in Gadag district, Nagamma alias Roopa (18), daughter of Siddanna Gowda from the same village, and Geetha (24), wife of Prakash alias Imran. All the three belong to nomad families.

The modus operandi of the gang was to go begging, and accepting to work in houses, farms etc. During this period, they used to keep an eye on men getting attracted towards them. After gaining their confidence, they gained entry into their houses, and stole ornaments and cash from there.

The trio was taken into custody when its members were found to be suspiously loitering near the area adjoining the Uppinangady temple. On verification of their bags, the police found a golden rope chain, four golden rings, three golden bangles, two cellphones, three bags, and clothes. During the questioning, they confessed that they had stolen these things from an auto rickshaw driver from Bajal, Mangaluru.

The lone unmarried member of the gang had studied in the government school here. As she knew the area well, the gang reportedly was keeping an eye on houses where rich men lived alone.

Police sub-inspector of Uppinangady station, Nandakumar and other staff took part in the operation.
