Jamkhandi, Nov 6: Congress' Anand Nyamagowda has made a successful electoral debut by defeating rival candidate Kulkarni Shrikanth Subrao of the BJP in Jamkhandi assembly seat by-election.

Bypoll to Jamkhandi Assembly seat was necessitated due to the death of Congress MLA Siddu Nyamagowda.

Both sides - the Bharathiya Janata Party and the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance, had called the by-polls a semi-final before the 2019 general elections.

Anand Nyamagowda secured 97013 votes while Srikanth Kulkarni of BJP garnered 57529 votes.

An estimated 67 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the by-polls for five constituencies. A total of 31 candidates were in the fray from all the five constituencies, though the contest was mainly between the Congress-JD(S) combine and the BJP.
