Mangaluru, Oct 23: The office of Karnataka chief minister has come to the rescue of a poor student who was going from pillar to post to obtain a medical seat. The student had secured high marks in pre-university science division despite poverty and was eligible for a medical seat after getting high rank in NEET examination. But he could not secure seat in any medical college. Finally, he wrote to Karnataka chief minister’s office about his plight and received a reply from the chief minister’s office with an assurance of medical seat.
Abdul Nasir
The student is Abdul Nasir, son of Kalkatta, Manjanady village resident Sadhu Kunhi. Abdul Nasir had completed his education in Kalkatta government higher primary school and high school and was good in academics. He had passed with distinction in SSLC and had nurtured a dream of becoming a doctor. Nasir is the youngest among seven children of Sadhu Kunhi couple. Nobody at home had pursued higher studies.
Though the family could manage its expenses with father’s canteen business and jobs of Nasir’s brothers, they were not rich enough to raise sufficient funds for medical education. Abdul Nasir, who had passed PU in Thokkottu St Sebastian PU College in 2017 waited for a year as he was determined to pursue medical education and wrote NEET examination on May 6 earlier this year. He secured 139th rank in it. But he could not get a seat in any medical college. Therefore, he wrote a letter to the chief minister’s office on October 12 explaining his helplessness. He promptly received a positive response for the letter from the chief minister’s office, Bengaluru on October 17. The letter directed the government chief secretary, department of higher education, asking to take suitable action. The student and his family hope that their dream may be a reality at least with the letter.
Abdul Nasir said that there is nobody at home who is highly educated. “I liked studies since young age and had an ambition to become a doctor. Therefore, I waited for a year after PUC and wrote NEET examination. But I could not get a seat anywhere. I am unable to go for management seat due to acute poverty. Therefore, I wrote to the chief minister explaining my plight. I am happy with his positive response. I hope to get a seat soon,” he said.
