Train runs over people during Dussehra celebrations in Amristar, over 50 feared dead

Amritsar, Oct 19 (IANS): In a horrific incident, over 50 people glued to watching a burning Ravan effigy while standing on railway tracks were crushed by a speeding train here in Punjab on Friday.

A large number of people were watching a huge Ravan effigy in flames while standing on the tracks at a railway crossing at Jora Phatak when the train on way from Pathankot to Amritsar mowed them down, triggering anger and outrage.

It was not clear why the train did not halt despite the presence of so many people on the tracks and why the railway crossing was left open for people to gather.

Witnesses said that as fire was set to the Ravan effigy amid exploding crackers, many of the around 700 people gathered at the event moved back from the flames only to end up standing on the tracks.

"Out of nowhere came the train," said a man, sounding angry. "Before anyone could realise what was happening, it ran over scores of people."

"When the effigy started to burn in full flow, people began running away from it fearing it may fall over them," said another man. "They did not realise that a speeding train was coming and the train did not sound its hooter."

Another man felt that the tragedy would have claimed at least 100 lives. The dead included several children, another witness said.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh cancelled a visit to Israel after hearing about the tragedy and area legislator and Local Bodies Minister Navjot Sidhu told a news channel from Bengaluru that the death toll was alarmingly high.

His wife Navjot Kaur Singh was the Chief Guest at the event.

It is sad to see many comments which are pointing out on the festival than the tradegy. This is problem of ones personal safety responsibility which lies solely on each individual . It is common sense that, one must not trespass in railway crossing as well as expressway . One must be careful of his or her own safety . Trains cannot be stopped in a moment and in the night no train drivers can see he only drives with the help of a signal . Just commenting for sake of commenting and using every situation in the country to Blame MODI is going to make Modi more stronger and agenda of his haters not success • really sad incident and my symohaties with the family . This accident was truly avoidable with few men with basic commonsense standing there and no one can be blamed . It is difficult to man a size of a country like India where basis infrastructure is biggest hurdle .

Very sad incident and hope such incidents do not happen in future. The people should be educated not to sitting on railway tracks or even be close to one unmanned track. The engine driver may not had any time to apply the brakes at a very short notice and not supposed to do it.
In Mangalore I saw yesterday people sitting on the road divider witnessing the Dasara festivities surely knowing that no vehicle will be plying on the road.
Political parties should not be blaming each other for this sad incident. By the way why do we need the "Bullet Train"?

WHY OUR CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IS NOT BANNING SUCH PRACTICES OF BURNING RAVAN EFFIGY AND OTHER SUCH PRACTICES ? THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD ALSO BAN FIRE CRACKERS AND LOUD SPEAKERS DURING FESTIVE SEASONS. BOTH NOISE POLLUTION AND AIRPOLLUTION GO TO PEAK DURING THESE FESTIVALS AND SUCH FESTIVALS CREATING POLLUTION SHOULD ALSO BE BANNED. CRORES OF MONEY IS SPENT ON LIGHTING AND WE DONT HAVE WATER TO DRINK DURING SUMMER.WHO WILL REALLY BENIFFIT FROM THESE FESTIVALS. THESE FESTIVALS ARE BECOMING BUSINESS THESE DAYS AND ARE LOOTING COMMON PEOPLE. EVEN PEOPLE HAVE TO SPEND MORE BY PAYING MORE MONEY TO BUY THINGS FOR FESTIVALS LIKE FLOWERS, MILK,FRUITS ETC. MILLIONS OF RUPEES ARE WASTED ON POURING MILK AND BREAKING COCONUTS ON GROUND.

Sorry about the tragedy. People are not suppose to stay on the track - it is railway property. Proper investigation needs to be done.

This is not the first time in our country this type tragedy took place. Now also it happened means our education is useless. 'NAYEYA BALA DONKU ADU DONKAY' A train can not come on your way, but if you are standing in its way then it is your mistake. no case is necessary. RIP souls. don't blame BJP, Congress or any political party.

Sympathize with the family of the departed, major human tragedy that could have been avoided.
Having said that, people have to take responsibility for their own actions. When an illegal or unlawful event happens, there are consequences and unfortunately resulted in children and adults loosing their lives. It is easy to scapegoat others while taking no responsibility for our own action.. we should learn from these tragedies that's one of the better ways to pay homage to the dead ..

Why are you treating Rawana in such an inhuman way? What did he do? He didn't rape anyone, he is not a corrupt king nor a politician, he didn't make his wife to walk on fire, He didn't leave his pregnant wife in the forest to be eaten by wild animals, even he didn't behead a Shiwa worshiper. .Then why are you angry with him ?

@Anil, have you lost your mind, how could Modi be responsible for such incidents, neither Modi nor Captain Amrinder Singh can do anything in this regard ....
It is a straight failure of local administration and Congress is in ruling the state, our's is a country of crazy crowd, if i point a finger towards the sky, standing in the middle of a street, immediately 50 people will gather in the middle of the road for no reason .....
You are addicted to blame Modi for each and every reason .....
It is a huge tragedy, innocent people have died, this is not a time to politicise such a catastrophe, have some humanity .....
Your Party's Minister Navjyot Singh Siddu's wife Mrs. Navjyot Kaur was the chief guest of the event, so who is to be held responsible ?? even she left immediately after the incident without helping people..... this is escapism ......
Now you have a very famous person to culpable, earlier to him, whole bunch of 10 years we did not have a face to blame on ......

    Mr. Moshu aka Sherlock Holmes,

It is a tragedy, but there is nothing fishy about it.

How many other aspects of life in India do you see great deal of respect for simple common sense safety precautions? Be it driving on the road or construction of a road. And this accident in Punjab is a mere manifestation of our "hell-with-safety" attitude.

    And just for your information:
    - Railways will never give permission for organizing events close to an used railway track. But I can guarantee that none of the organizers had any contact with the Railway
    - A train travelling at high speed needs more than a kilometre to stop. The wheels and the tracks simply do not have sufficient friction to stop like a car!!

Last night in an interview to the tv channels a railway board officer was telling that the instructions had been passed concern section to shut the gate of the track enrouting the event. But xespite all these precaustions yet tragedy did happen !!! which could have certainly been avoided. Whatever maybe the reasons whether it is by sabotage or neglegence, the concern responsibles must be brought to justice.

People are very irresponsible. How can the train come from nowhere. It's their own fault such accidents happen. And it is wrong for compensation to be paid to them. It's an criminal act of revelling on the tracks and hence these peoples families and event organisers should be penalized. A similar local case at thokottu the family was asked to pay fine of twenty thousand for retrieval of the mortal remains.
