Rose petals, garland: Rousing welcome for rape accused bishop Mulakkal in Jalandhar

Chandigarh, Oct 18 (PTI): Roman Catholic bishop Franco Mulakkal, who faces allegations of raping a nun, received a rousing welcome from his supporters when he reached Jalandhar after being released on bail by a Kerala court.

Mulakkal smiled as followers showered rose petals and garlanded him. Till a few weeks ago, he held charge as the bishop of the Jalandhar diocese.

The bishop, who was escorted by Punjab police personnel, did not talk to the media.

He was granted conditional bail by the Kerala High Court on Monday, and released from a jail near Kottayam a day later.

He was arrested on September 21 after being accused of repeatedly raping and sexually abusing a nun between 2014 and 2016.

As the demands for his arrest grew, the Vatican temporarily relieved him of all pastoral responsibilities as the bishop of the Jalandhar Diocese of the Missionaries of Jesus.

While granting bail, the court had directed him to surrender his passport and not to enter home state Kerala except for appearing before the probe officer once in two weeks.

In her complaint to the Kottayam Police in June, the nun had alleged that Bishop Mulakkal raped her at a guest house in May 2014 and later sexually exploited her on several occasions. The nun said in her complaint that she had to approach the police as the church authorities did not act on her repeated complaints.

Mulakkal, however, has denied the charges as "baseless and concocted," insisting she levelled them as the Catholic order had rejected her demands for favours.

Have you ever been falsely accused or lied? If you’ve been wrongfully blamed or misunderstood for your intentions, turn to Scripture and the power of prayer. Regarding false accusations, the psalmist says, “For they do not speak peace, but against those who are quiet in the land they devise words of deceit” (Psalm 35:20). This reading is an accurate description of the motives and results of false accusations. People lie about the innocent to stir up trouble. People accuse others falsely as a revenge tactic, power play or when they think they have something to gain. This behavior is unbiblical; moreover, we should respond in a godly way. It’s important that we pray and trust God during a period of false accusation and loneliness. While it may not change your circumstances, it will stabilize your spirit. Always remember that you have a basis for confidence since God Himself is righteous. In the end, His justice and fair play will abound toward you as well.

"The Bible tells us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23). We desperately need that reminder when we’re wrongfully blamed and under attack. Let’s face it. Unless we guard our own heart, we will soon be down in the gutter with our opponents. We’ll be tempted to attack them as they have attacked us, to vilify them, to smear their reputation and in general do whatever we have to do to get even with them. It’s frightening how quickly we can fall into the attack mode when we get angry at heart. But there’s hope in God. If you want to turn your heart around, pray this prayer: Dear Loving God, thank you for another day of life. Today, I seek a change of heart. I was wrongfully blamed for something and it weighs heavily on my heart. Today, I seek a change of heart. I suffer from my hardness. Please change me Lord. I know that only You can do this," Amen.

Alwyn, Mangalore — sorry unless you know the truth, please do not quote scriptures to defend someone. Are you implying that the nuns are lying? If yes do you have evidence? If you do have evidence, kindly do provide and I am happy to help prosecute the nuns. If you do not have evidence let the investigation and the law take it's course. and if Mulakkal is guilty he needs to be punished under the law of the land and if the nuns are guilty of false accusations they will suffer the wrath of God!

    Hello PenMightierThanTheSword!, Mangalore {I do not know who are you}

Thank you for reading my comment. In my comments, I did not specify any person. The explanation is my opinion, and it is [We call backstabbing, jealousy, rumors, and false accusations] happening everywhere every day. At the workplace, schools, colleges, market, banks, holy places, and at home too. The truth is based on what you think or what you taught? For me truth is simple that is God's vision, that means if I do anything well as per God's plan that is the truth. Example if someone comes and asks help to hide from evil, I will allow the person to hide. But if the person lied to me, then it is his faith in God's hand. I just did the truth as per my faith and practice.
Coming to the point my comments for both bishop and also nuns. Whoever lied or did the evil act has to face Almighty, and his judgment is always the truth, Amen.
    Hope you are happy now.

The whole case stinks. The Catholic church is driving the faithful away from the church with so many different incidents that even Christ would be ashamed of! From rape to pedophilia some of the clergy are walking away scot-free!!!
"Discovered In The Vatican: 'Unprecedented' Amount Of Child Porn!
Largest Catholic Church pedophile bust in history. As the Catholic Church battles to stem their continuing exposure of clerical pedophilia, detectives have uncovered an "unprecedented" amount of child pornography including images, videos and other explicit content discovered within the walls of the Vatican. It is actually shameful. He is still an accused and his supporters could have waited until the case was over and see what the outcome was. He has not been absolved and is still an accused. This is sending a wrong message to the world. When people did the same to Asaram Bapu and other rape accused, people found it wrong and many people who have written comments here were then criticising the supporters of those accused godmen. Why these double standards? Does justice have colour or religion?

There was an allegation of rape against Asaram in 2013. The alleged victim was a minor, who was confined against her will.

The judgment against him was passed almost FIVE years later.

(In the current case, the accuser is in late 40s, and it has not even been five months since the allegation was made).

The trial by the media and the pressure mounted by the Protesting Nuns outside the High Court virtually condemmed him as Guilty even before the trial commenced. It is nice the High Court has granted him bail that enables a sense of Justice being meted out to the Bishop.

As accused is innocent until proved Guilty and so at this stage the benefit of the diubt should be given to the Bishop until proved Guilty by the Court of Law.

Shame on the people for giving such a warm welcome. And shame on the priest who even don't have a bit of shy or shame on his face. After serving in jail. It's really a shameful scene in front of our religion and society. I wish pope will take right decision on this.

I have said from day one that the so-called nun must be subjected to a lie-detector test.

Police have found so many contradictions in the statements of the accuser, it is not funny at all.

India must have strong laws on wilful defamation, especially using the convenient cover of sexual crimes. It is incredible how the opportunistic run to the media to destroy others!

I was brought up with certain principles. One of them was "Judge not, that ye be not judged" - attributed to Jesus.

This particularly applied to gossip. A gossipping person creates a monster. So, I do not judge that "monster".

The media, social or mainstream, when targetting "monsters" is just mega-gossip!

The Government has judiciary to investigate and pass judgment. Until then the "monster" is actually innocent. Our law says that.

Additionally, we need to listen to the voice of our conscience!

Does your conscience allow you to be biased? Why are you passing judgement here. The bishop has not been cleared by law. He is still an accused. Only murderers and people with flight risk are denied bails. Therefore what is this celebration about? You say the nun must undergo lie detector test, why not the Bishop also?

So many crimes committed by people wearing the holy robes were allowed to happen because of blind faith and nobody bothered or cared to hear the cries of the victims, which is why the truth is coming out now. Even close family and relatives ignored the cries and complaints of the victims and hushed them up and this gave a free reign to the predators, who got away with every crime that they committed. Times have changed my friend. Please remember that a crime is a crime, and the robes that you wear will not protect you anymore.

It is also an insult to so many good priests and nuns, who are sacrificing their lives in the service of the poor and the marginalized in far flung places across the globe, many a times risking their lives in the service of God. By allowing a few criminals to get away, we are tainting every honest person who has dedicated his /her life in the service of God.
