Protesters on streets, agitate over women's entry to Sabarimala temple

Updated

Kochi, Oct 17(DC): Hours ahead of Sabarimala temple opening its doors to women of all ages in the renowned shrine in Kerala, protesters, mostly women, took to streets agitating against the Supreme Court's last month verdict.

Slogans were raised as women marched in protest at Nilakkal, the main gateway to Sabarimala.

The doors of Sabarimala temple will be opened to women for the time at 5 pm today.

Pilgrims have started arriving at Nilakkal.

Meanwhile, 7 protesters have been arrested for creating ruckus. Police said that every devotee will have straight passage to Sabarimala. Protesters will not be allowed to gather at the base, they added.

Kerala on edge as Sabarimala opens on Wednesday, heavy police personnel on duty

Nilakkal, Oct 17 (DC): Tension prevailed Wednesday morning in Kerala's Nilakkal, the main gateway to Sabarimala, after the police used force to disperse devotees opposing the entry of girls and women of menstrual age into the hill shrine.

Acting tough, the police, deployed in large numbers in Nilakkal, some 20 km away from the Sabarimala hilltop, also removed a makeshift shelter erected by a protesting group Sabarimala Achara Samrakshana Samiti.

The protesting group of devotees had been staging a sit-in chanting Ayyappa mantra in the shelter in protest against the Supreme Court order permitting women of all age groups to enter the shrine.

The protesting people, who were less in numbers, ran from the spot when the police initiated action in the early hours of Wednesday when they tried to block the buses from the key entry point to the temple.

On Tuesday, both men and women stopped vehicles and evicted young women they thought were headed for the hill shrine.

A couple from Tamil Nadu, aged 45 and 40, on their way to Pamba, were forced to get down from the KSRTC bus Monday night allegedly by some activists of the Sabarimala Achara Samrakshana Samiti.

Although the couple had said that they would go only up to Pamba and not climb Sabarimala, the activists prevented them. The police later took them to safety.

Some activists of the Sabarimala Achara Samrakshana Samiti, who had stayed back at Nilakkal, also allegedly prevented media persons from carrying out their professional duty.

In Thiruvananthapuram, the meeting between Travancore Devaswom Board and the pro-tradition group comprising tantris and Pandalam ex-royals on Wednesday to find a via media solution fizzled out over whether the board would prefer a review petition before the Supreme Court.

For the LDF government, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reiterated the resolve to punish anyone taking law in his/her hands and ruled out filing a review petition since the government is committed to gender equality.

Around 1000 police personnel, 800 men and 200 women, have been deployed in Nilakkal to ensure a safe passage to the pilgrims to the Lord Ayyappa temple.

Mahesh, here we are discussing about women's entry to Shabarimala. It is about women's rights and gender equality. In nun's rape case it is just a simple allegation. we should stand united for justice in shabarimala case. Woman's rights to be protected. In Nun's rape case, law will take its own course. Until judgment, please don't hold anyone guilty!! You know , the logic is as simple as that!!!

Absolute terrorism like the Taliban. What happened to Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas? the BJP, RSS all involved in the terrorising people at Sabarimala. What happened to the BJP's Beti Bachao? BJP in full force at Pamba. Last month Kerala state wanted help from the other parts of the country. Why should we help these terrorists? Do we need a visa to visit any place in a country. Is this called Acche din. What is the leader of saffron parties doing I mean our PM?

    Dylan,

don't mix it & make it sajjigebajil. first of all the equality is required everywhere not only in shabarimala. barring caste/religion in every place women should allow to enter. ofcourse we need to follow court order but it should not limited to shabarimala only. also note that court has already given the verdict on usage of loud speaker. but are we follow that? then who is terrorist?

Just so sad and pathetic that there is no 'aukaat' of the Supreme Court in India. When idiots do not know how to respect and follow the Supreme Court's orders, we must realise where we are headed to as a country.

God never distinguishes between men and women. All these stupid rules, discrimination on caste, creed and gender were made by brainless monkeys, in the guise of human beings. Dirty political game is being played now, that's all. Khakhi Chaddis trying to gain a foothold in Kerala riding on Lord Aiyappa's shoulders. Shame on them!!!!!

Those who are protesting, probably have never visited the Temple and even may not be a Lord Ayyappa devotee.
For the actual devotees it might take a while to accept the judgement , And eventually it wouldn't affect their devotion to Lord Ayyappa.
There must be a strict do's and don't in the temple premises. It might be a heart break for the devotees if it becomes just another tourist temple for a casual visit..

Child Marriage, Dowry, Sati, Untouchability were also customs and traditions...……..

If customs and traditions are against human advancement then they should be done away with. Men and women are equal before God. This custom was not designed by God but man.

The Supreme Court is right. If some women don't want to enter the temple, then so be it. Nobody is forcing them to. But if others want to enter and worship, then they should be allowed to. Remember God has created every one of us as equals. BJP is simply fishing in troubled waters. This is a classic example to playing the religious card and the sentiments of the people. I hope and pray that the people of Kerala are smart enough to see through this evil and dirty design.

"According to Hindu mythology, Kerala was created by Lord Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu by throwing his axe across the sea to create new land for his devotees to live peacefully. So, Kereala is God's own creation, hence it is called God's own country!" - Google
But to worship Lord Parasurama, the people of the State have created some divisions - Rights only for Men and not for Women of all age.
Is that Gad made or Humans declared ?

Why people should take law in hand. The God who is worshipped and present in that temple
will shower upon his blessings on all who enter with good faith and clean heart.

    Who are these
hooligans to judge people - who should enter the temple and who should not based on gender.
Though we all believe Kerala has attained literacy - this particular movement shows their illiteracy

One thing is for sure, the LDF is going to pay heavily for this foolish decision. In fact the previous UDF government had files an affidavit that the customs of the shrine should be honoured and it is in no favour of allowing women from 10 to 50 years of age to enter the temple.

The LDF withdrew the affidavit and said it had no objection in allowing all women to enter the temple.
Now whole of Kerala, including the women from LDF are opposing the supreme court order. Things have gone very bad for LDF. If Congress does not utilize the situation, BJP is going to strengthen its base in Kerala.

contempt of court? saffronists. your these two words shows the intention of your comment.

first come to the point no.1 contempt of court. there are many court decisions are not followed in this country, best example loud speaker issue.

second point saffronists. you are talking about equality but is this applicable religionwise? bcoz there is no entry for women in other religion also. so when we talk about justice it should apply all the citizen of this country. but when we tried to apply for selectively then this kind of issue will arise.

Sorry state of affairs in Kerala. This clearly shows that we are going back in time or living in the past.

India can never progress even in 1000 years because of such mentality. Supreme Court judgement has no value.

The main issue is mixing of religion with politics and vice versa. Just imagine, Shiv Sena activists are ready for mass suicide which clearly shows there is absolutely no value for human life in India.

Cows are superior to humans, people are lynched over mere beef business! God only has to save India.
