We only control supply: Saudi Arabia to PM Modi’s warning to oil producers

New Delhi, Oct 16 (DC): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday warned oil producers like Saudi Arabia that high crude prices were hurting the global economy as he sought reasonable rates and a review of payment terms to provide a temporary relief to the local currency.

At the third annual brainstorming session with the chief executives of top global and Indian oil and gas companies, PM Modi also appealed to top oil producers to help nations like India bridge what he called a "resource crunch" - a fallout of rising crude prices.

The rising crude oil prices have pushed the rupee down - this year it has fallen 14.5 per cent, making imports costlier. The country is over 83 per cent dependent on imports to meet its oil needs.

"The oil market is producer driven and both the quantity and prices are determined by the oil-producing countries... Though there is enough production, the unique features of marketing in the oil sector have pushed up the oil prices," a statement issued at the end of the meet quoted the Prime Minister as saying.

Saudi oil minister Khalid A Al-Falih, who was present at the meet, however, said oil prices were not within their control.

"Many factors lie outside the control of oil producers like us... we only control supply," Falih told reporters on the sidelines of the event.

He, however, said he has met the Prime Minister and oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan and "assured them of full and continued commitment of meeting India's oil demand as well as continuing to invest here in India".

Saudi Arabia is the India's second-biggest oil supplier behind Iraq and is committed to meet any shortfall that may arise due to sanctions on Iran, Falih said.

The meet was held as petrol and diesel prices continued their upward march despite a drop in crude oil prices by 5 to 6 dollars a barrel. The hike has almost wiped out the Rs 2.50 cut made by the government last week.

How can any Anpad chap, who knows nothing ABC of economy goes forward to warn others and teach them economy?

Our former PM, a famous economist PHD holder, didnt question other countries irrespective of curde oil reached $150, but managed the economy of the country so well that during 2008 when most of the world faced recession, our India under the leadership of PM Manmohan Singh, stood stable, unlike how it is now, going pathetic day by day and current PM putting blame on other countries.

Common how can a consumer create a mafia to effectively bargain the price.
The supplies are always the bosses and the consumers cannot form such a unity or challenge with suppliers. Such scheme is senseless and useless.
When someone is hungry we cannot challenge with the restaurant owners to reduce the price on their items. He would say we are not forcing you to consume.
People can rationalize but cannot go away with use of fuel.

OPEC mafias are behaving like some of our bunder traders by highly inflating the price. With this money they even construct buildings in sea and in air!

Oil prices are just hovering around 80$ a barrel, they have seen a high of 140$ while Mr Singh was PM of India who was smart enough to manage the show without resorting to some Mafia as suggested by you! Btw, without having any feasible alternative to fossil fuel, what kind of consumer's mafia you are talking about? Remember, beggers can't afford to be choosers!

I do not think, any of sub-continents countries have approached organized such a meeting with Oil producers & exporters and Oil supply companies. First let Modi reduce taxes on Fuel by 50% and check the retail fuel prices. You cannot apply taxes (central excise, VAT etc., ) more than 400% and cry with others to show your innocence.

Now Maha Yogi is after Allahabad name change because it was due to Mogul influence on India’s history. We have to wait and watch when they will fall on British rule and some historical names introduced by them. History was made or created and how any one can change the event or wipe out. Then what is meaning of History.

When you talk too much you must also know how to fulfil you commitment or promises. Situation is in your hand and your capacity how to rule a country. When Congress was ruling and controlling the situation in spite of the Intl. oil price was almost double of what is today. Congress did the job sheer on merit and proper planning.

Some people here believe that it is the suppliers that control the price.

Normal economics says that the price reaches a certain point depending on BOTH demand and supply.

The supply folks (there are many for oil) alone do not determine the price point. If the demand is lower, the price will be lower.

India does not go for alternative energy sources (which could lower demand). Why?

The alternative energy sources do not bring in huge revenues for the central Government. Oil does!

Let's not forget, for the oil producing countries it's pure business and not social service or charity. For a country like India, the only way out is to cut down government expenditure and boost exports which have hit a new low in Modi's regime. He got away with it when oil prices were at record low, in fact that was the time for the think-tanks (if any!) to have a strategy in place to face an eventuality like this. Now this wishful thinking won't get us anywhere.

Between 2012 -14, the price of crude oil was much more and yet UPA has managed to keep it within the affordable limits of people. The Value of Rupee also was very much in control at that time and the growth rate was better.

This governement is nothing but total failure in administration. Jootly is not a financier but a lawyer. All the other ministers are inexperienced. Prime Minister himself is uneducated. what you can expect of this government?

I am sorry to say my fellow Indians, we are doomed and there is little hope of come back. India has gone 10 years behind and thanks to this so called bjp and its good for nothing leader.

While I understand the rhetoric from the Indian side...

If the suppliers like Saudi Arabia receive payment in Indian currency, the Saudi economy may go bust!

In just 4 years of BJP rule, the Indian rupee exchange rate with the USD has moved from 56.57 to a whisker below 75. What a devaluation!

After receiving the rupee for the oil, Saudis may have go around with wheelbarrows carrying the Indian currency.

Let us stop our wishful thinking that the sellers will listen to our meaningless demands, and bend over backwards to please us.

Even if the Gujju-bhai goes and hugs every single camel in Hijaz.
