Mangaluru: Widespread rain experienced in coast - lightning inflicts losses

Mangaluru, Oct 15: On Sunday October 14 evening, rain accompanied by lightning and thunder lashed Dakshina Kannada district. There are reports of some houses getting damaged due to lightning.

Heavy rain was experienced in Subramanya and surround areas. Devotees who had thronged the temples all over coastal Karnataka to take part in Navaratri festivities and witness cultural programmes faced problems because of rain.

The city, Beltangady, Venoor, Puttur, Sullia, Moodbidri, Bantwal, and Vittal in Dakshina Kannada district received good rainfall. Several places in Udupi district like Padubidri, Udupi and Manipal experienced light rain or drizzle.

After lightning struck the house of M A Muhammed at Pallathur, Perabe near Alankar in Kadaba taluk during late night hours on Saturday, six persons including an year-old baby suffered injuries. They were admitted into the primary health centre at Kadaba for treatment. The walls and roof of the house developed cracks, and electrical equipment were destroyed. The loss in this case has been put at one lac rupees. Lightning which struck the residence of Laxmi Poojarthi at Bellibettu, Kallamandkur near Moodbidri on Saturday night also left behind a trail of destruction. The loss in this incident has been estimated at four lac rupees as electrical equipment were burnt, roof and walls were damaged. Two women who were inside the house had a providential escape.

    Lack of lightning arrests is not the issue.Over the years lightning arrests installation has increased substantially because presently all telephone tower/Mobile tower has lightning arrest and presently every village has one or two tower.The cause of lightning is nature itself and theory everyone knows.

    Everyone near UPCL/NAGARJUNA says intensity of lightning is increased after power plant started working here. Lightning took many lives , many trees near here. But irony part is no ministers, scientists and related officials talking about that industry !!!! WHY ?
