'Paper tiger' Modi buckled under US pressure: Congress

New Delhi, Jul 12 (IANS): Questioning the government's decision to cut oil imports from Iran, the Congress on Thursday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "paper tiger" and said he has buckled under the US pressure.

The party said the Modi government has consciously reduced the import of crude oil from Iran in June and it proves that Modi's foreign policy is "confusing and circular".

It also asked if the government has a concrete plan to protect the Indian customers from the rise of fuel prices due to reduction in oil imports from Iran.

"India was importing 770,000 barrels per day, that figure has fallen to approximately 570,000 barrels per day. Everybody knows India imports 80 per cent of its requirement of crude oil from overseas.

"The reduction in import of oil from Iran will directly squeeze the pockets of the common man, reduce supply, increase fuel prices and bloat the current account deficit," said Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill.

The leader said the reduction shows that Modi is a "paper tiger" and has crumbled under the US pressure, ultimately hurting the Indian consumer.

"It also exhibits and proves that Modi's foreign policy is confusing and circular. Modi has once again prioritized the US' interests over India's national interests when it comes to controlling fuel prices."

Manufacturing electric cars and selling them in Indian market at the government subsidized price can improve the Indian economy and the environment in a longer run. Simultaneously, government should start building new power plants to fulfill the increase demand for electricity. Alternately, Japan should be allowed to sell their electric cars financing with 0% interest to consumers like they do it in the United States. Japan has tons of money and facing deflation. They have already financed the Indian Bullet Train project with no interest.

This shows that this government has no guts when faced with foreign pressure. I can not imagine the governments of Nehru or Indira Gandhi would have done nay thing like this cowardly act. When Nixon threatened India to send it Navy to support Pakistan in the East where India was entring to save the locals India did not back down. US did sinjce its navy could not reach Bangladesh on time before they declared independence with the help of India. Where is that India now?

India s own ONGC videsh s discovered Iran s Farzad oil field was not taken by UPA which lead to huge loss to both India and Iran .Now Iran is asking much much more price for the same Farzad oil field .And Oil minister Pradhan has said about 1 years back itself of Farzad not given we will cut imports
Now US is giving Shale technology obtained Crude oil to India .If India oil companies can adjust to that oil then India can reduce dependency on Opec countries
Moreover we will make more gas , electric ,solar energy dependency too
If it's due to US pressure then India would have cut 100% imports from Iran which is not the case

What do you mean 'If Indian companies can adjust to that oil?' FYI India has already been importing shale oil from US. Also what do you mean by "We will make more gas, electric, ,solar energy dependency"???
