Mangalore, Aug 17: As many as 5,000 students on Wednesday August 17 entered the streets and protested in support of Anna Hazare’s campaign for eradication of corruption by urging the Government to implement the Jan Lokpal Bill.

With the increase in turnout of the students every hour, the protest seemed to break the record of any previous demonstrations over social issues in the city in recent years.

Student said they had come to the streets without any particular organization being called to participate in the demonstration. However ABVP flags were seen waving across the streets.

The demonstration showed the power of students and their urge to make a difference. "We are trying to change nothing more and nothing less than a whole system in the nation that is marred by corruption’’ a student participant in the protest said.

Unlike other ‘College Bandh’ days, students apparently understood the need for fight against corruption and did not straightaway go home or movie theaters rather came on streets, another student observed.

As the students gathered in front of Jyothi Circle, vehicular movements were disrupted. Police then diverted the route and allowed for the smooth flow of traffic.

In Udupi, students of Poornaprajna College, MGM College, Upendra Pai Memorial College, St Mary’s ITI Chitpady, Spoorthidhama Koteshwar, Government First Grade College Tenkanidiyoor and SDM Ayurveda College Udyavar, Patanjali Trust, activists of CPI (M) and district BJP staged protest, condemning the arrest of Anna Hazare.

District CPI (M) office-bearers Vishvanat Rai, K Shankar, Venkatesh Koni, Prasanna Kumar, Veeraswamy and Kaviraj, BJP state Yuva Morcha president Sunil Kumar, MLA Raghupati Bhat, ZP president Shankar Poojary, district BJP president Uday Kumar Shetty and others were present.

Well said Radhia. Keep going as a independent Student Group and don't ever join hands with those who came to rally with different flags. The Cause is for us INDIANS and not for any party. Therefore, there should have been uniformity and also only ONE flag and that is our National Flag. Good Work.

Stephen, do you understand what you are commenting ? This is not the party politics. We must rise above party affiliation. Corrupt politician, bureaucrat even common men are there in every sect, home, village, town and so on. This 'jan lokpal bill' is to immune India from corrupt men and practice. If you cant support, dont try to derail the movement. Your eddy will sure to go behind bar and his followers, if Anna emerge ( we ) victorius.

Saying that the government of India thought about the lokpal bill only after Anna sat on a fast is wrong. Lokpal bill as been in the pipeline for over 40 years. This UPA government was again plaining to create a fresh draft to bring in this law. Anna's first fast was to have the civil society included in the drafting panel with equal number of people from the politician side and the civil society. And they also wanted the draft to be made into a law quickly and not drag their feet like in the previous case. At the end what happened was quite interesting as the drafting panel ended up having only two parties represented in it. viz. the government of India and Team Anna. No CIVIL SOCIETY and no rest of the political parties. Yes the agitation did speed up the process.

Mr. Harold D'cunha, the UPA govt thought about Lokpal bill only after Anna started his hunger strike in April. Anna had given deadline of Aug 15th to get the bill passed. When the parliament can pass 18bill in just 12 mins, why can't it frame lokpal bill in 4-5 months?

Dear Jamini, what was the reason Anna to stick to his guns to start fasting 16th of August where as the Lokpal bill is in the parliament and has to be passed as per the norms drafted under the procedure in the Indian Constitution.

He could have waited for another 3 to 4 days and If the Lok Pal bill is not as per Civil society demands, then go for the fast unto death hunger strike. The way Anna approach is nothing short like a dictator.

In spite of this, i will support Anna because I am fed up of the corruption in Mangalore and Karnataka as I a just a AAM Admee/common man.

Mr. Nagesh nayak, i beg to differ with your comment about BJP, RSS, ABVP , SS, SRS, BD, VHP & ALL OTHER ORGANISATIONS ARE FIGHTING TO ERADICATE CORRUPTION FROM INDIA. It is just a myth. None of the political parties want a corruption free India. It is just because of common men’s voice today this revolution is taking place. If BJP was so serious about corruption why they didn’t take ANNAS bill in the parliament. This shows that BJP is just trying to piggy bag on ANNAS movement and try to gain some lost glory and respect because of Yeddy. By this movement people of India have shown politicians their real worth, i.e common man is the real ruler. HATS OFF TO EVERY INDIAN WHO SUPPORTED THIS MOVEMNT WHOLE HEARTDLY IRESPRCITVE OF THEIR POLITICAL AFFILITAION. ANNA THUM SANGARSH KARO HUM THUMARE SAATH HAI! BARATH MATHA KI JAI!

It is sad that this protest had the backing of a political party (BJP) when the main architect of this revolution (Anna Hazare) had strictly told that "no political party needs to be involved" in this protest. It is a revolt of the common man.

The protests in the twin districts have just no meaning. ABVP just wanted to score some brownie points, nothing else. The whole thing is a farce, done only for publicity.

Its quite amusing and contradictory to read. Here in your own backyard in Karnataka, corruption was there for all to see but none of these noble minded individuals and organisations thought it fit to voice or demonstrate their protest then. Also, corruption is a burning issue of national importance which affects us in every sphere of life and what better way to demonstrate than to show our unity of purpose in proudly holding the tiranga. But what do we get to see? Innocent students holding flags of particular organisations as if they are the only ones who are raising their voice and all others are sleeping!
As long as politics is allowed to occupy centrestage in any form of protest and we allow our opinions to be biased because we support one political party and not another, nothing worthwhile will emerge out of this cacophony. Today, the ruling party at the centre, the UPA is at the receiving end. Tomorrow, the opposition might get a chance to rule at the centre and things will not change for the better as long as the crooks are there in all parties and the desire to keep all allies happy in a coalition will only compromise the desire to be corruption free.
Wake up all you sleepy heads out there and take your blinkers off. If corruption has to be rooted out completely, we have to join hands and raise our voices and not be biased by caste, creed, religion or politics. Only then will a new India be able to wash itself clean and emerge from the filth that is lying around us

A very controversial movement by the organizers to mislead the students and the general public. These protests are led by ABVP which is a student wing of BJP. Until and unless it is free from political parties, these kind of movements will not be useful. Of course, many of these students who had participated in these agitations do not know the real motive of the 'organizers'. The students should ask why this movement was not there when the entire state was looted by the BJP ministers! For more that 3 years loot in billions was going on in Karnataka and yet no action of this kind was there by the so called 'student leaders' Why suddenly now they woke up? I am doubting the 'motive' of this action. However, we all support a movement against corruption but not led by corrupt political leaders! Folks just think over it!

People holdin saffron flags might've joined us but that does not mean we were protesting for their cause. And for those who think it was just a day of fun for us, let me inform you all that we lost a day of attendance in are colleges and schools. Again, it does not mean that we have lost focus on our studies. Also, our idea of fun would be to get out and go catch a movie or something. Not walk 2-3 kms in this humid weather. To those who think only 35 and above are mature, then why are we given voting rights. We are old enough to drive, drink, vote, go to war but not old enough to protest against something that is clearly wrong. Your views might conflict mine, but do give it a thought.

The support to the movement looks good, but did these children know the purpose of it. The institution where they study and the teachers who teach them have taken some responsibility to make them understand what is each individuals moral responsibility. Only Sceience, Social studies, mathematics does not give any knowledge in this regard. The student might be excellent and top ranking but his personal contribution towards his family, Society, and finally to the country matters the most. So my humble request to all teachers take this moral responsibility and teach today's generation the values of life to become a corrupt free person. Also about the movement, if you feel Anna can do the work, why have you voted these politician to power. You have lost your right the day you vote these individuals for power, who will come after 5 years begging at your door. In case if you are in trouble they will forget what you did to them. So please wake up and start evaluating instead of making a mass protest and then keeping quite till somebody suddenly says do it.

Thank you Daijiworld for the excellent coverage of Anna Hazare´s movement and all the details you offer readers of the recent protests in Mangalore and other parts of India.

By the excellent coverage Daijiworld is a strong defender of democracy.

I am of the opinion no representative government in a democracy can deny citizens their fundamental right to dissent and peaceful protest.

Anna Hazare wished to commence an indefinite fast to express his determination but he and lots of his supporters were arrested.
By ordering the illegitimate detention protests have sparked all over India.

The United Progressive Alliance government will have to give in Anna´s demands because Anna Hazare receives support from people from all walks of life.

The biggest hindrance for India´s growth is corruption and degrading moral turpitude.

Suddenly there is a rare oppurtunity to put in place a potent mechanism to end high-level corruption.
The ideals and values of democracy are defended currently all over India and the government will have to take steps to create a Lokpal that inspires confidence.

As many as 5,000 students on Wednesday August 17 showed their determination and entered the streets and protested in support of Anna Hazare’s campaign for eradication of corruption by urging the Government to implement the Jan Lokpal Bill.

For friends of India like me is it encouraging to see how Indians wish a country without corruption.

    Best regards

    Kurt

Students be aware. The political party will use you and they will reap the benefit.

The evil of corruption should be eradicated from the root it self and we have to fight, work for this evil. Be careful of the divisive force who will divide the students on the basis of political party.

Anna Hazare made it very clear, he will not affiliate nor require any political party's support. Then why ABVP who have been patronised by BJP are carrying their ABVP flag in this student movement?

Well said Mr Vijay, I appreciate your views. " If Govt doesn't agree, why is opposition for?. Infact Politics is a highly profitable business in India and Corruption is their profit Margin. What is going on now is a political consipiracy though Anna's motives appears to be clean and all of us are craving to see corrupt free India. But in India, politicians, govt. officials, business people all have developed a cynicism and formed a sort of vicious circles in which moral values and honest intentions are no longer held valid. Adulteration of even baby food, bribery, fraud and economic, political and administrative manipulations with an eye on earning profits has brought untold misery to the people particulary midle class, salaried and poor people. When corruption is in blood, it's defficult to eradicate unless we change our political system which is not possible in free India where every one is corrupt including media. I was also a student, and students are innocents and they do not have idea as to who is trying to use them and why? ABVP always maintained it's double standard and it was at it's deaf-ear when Yudiurappa was looting Karnataka during his long tenure. The people who killed Mahatma Gandhi wanted to create chao's in the country and want to come back to power as their earlier plans and attempts to grab the power have been futile. So they increase their subversive activities and put their best effort to create unrest in soceity.

Anna Hazare has said this is a fight for second independence, i only hope and pray that these fanatics and oppertunists do not scratch their way for another partition like the then partition of India and Pakistan after independence.

  • Roshan, Sacheripete/Abu Dhabi

    Wed, Aug 17 2011

A look at the salient features of Jan Lokpal Bill:

    1. An institution called LOKPAL at the centre and LOKAYUKTA in each state will be set up

    2. Like Supreme Court and Election Commission, they will be completely independent of the governments. No minister or bureaucrat will be able to influence their investigations.

    3. Cases against corrupt people will not linger on for years anymore: Investigations in any case will have to be completed in one year. Trial should be completed in next one year so that the corrupt politician, officer or judge is sent to jail within two years.

    4. The loss that a corrupt person caused to the government will be recovered at the time of conviction.

    5. How will it help a common citizen: If any work of any citizen is not done in prescribed time in any government office, Lokpal will impose financial penalty on guilty officers, which will be given as compensation to the complainant.

    6. So, you could approach Lokpal if your ration card or passport or voter card is not being made or if police is not registering your case or any other work is not being done in prescribed time. Lokpal will have to get it done in a month's time. You could also report any case of corruption to Lokpal like ration being siphoned off, poor quality roads been constructed or panchayat funds being siphoned off. Lokpal will have to complete its investigations in a year, trial will be over in next one year and the guilty will go to jail within two years.

    7. But won't the government appoint corrupt and weak people as Lokpal members? That won't be possible because its members will be ed by judges, citizens and constitutional authorities and not by politicians, through a completely transparent and participatory process.

    8. What if some officer in Lokpal becomes corrupt? The entire functioning of Lokpal/ Lokayukta will be completely transparent. Any complaint against any officer of Lokpal shall be investigated and the officer dismissed within two months.

    9. What will happen to existing anti-corruption agencies? CVC, departmental vigilance and anti-corruption branch of CBI will be merged into Lokpal. Lokpal will have complete powers and machinery to independently investigate and prosecute any officer, judge or politician.

    10. It will be the duty of the Lokpal to provide protection to those who are being victimized for raising their voice against corruption.

    Fundamental duties

To judge the cases and make jurisdictions against corruption cases with the Lokpal.
To judge whether a case is legal or whether a fake complaint has been made.
To potentially impose fines on a fake complaint, or even a short span of jail time, if the case is not proved to be legally true

When Sangh Parivar engages in communal acticvities they are criticised for not focussing on the real issues. Now when they protest against the real issues, they are told to back off.

I would have liked to see some green flags and some red flags also to show that all parties and ideaologies are together when it comes to fighting a real issue bothering the nation.

That is reason why this movement in only urban centric. By the way baring finger counts none of them aware what is junkpal.Do we need a law onlyy to control central govt employees and MPs. Why dont we apply to all a common law - Anti corruption act with a minor modification. The street wonderers can be motivated to clean the garbage so that atleast we can have clean road sides

A person can be called matured only after the minmum age of 35 or above and not before. Let students stop giving bribes at Government offices to get their job done in no time. Anti corruption movement should start from the base. If any one ask what for student demonstration they simply say it is because of ABVP has called in order to support ANNA HAZARE but they do not know proper cause.

Although i support Annaji views, that corruption should be a issue of grave concern, i differ with the approach. If the govt doesnt agree, then what is the opposition for, can't they fight on behalf of the civil society and all indians. It is sad to see politics being played, we dont want another election. If this govt has failed people will replace it. I feel the opposition is playing a deadly game here. I request the opposition parties to table the Jan lokpal bill, rather than being a dumb spectator, enjoying the tamasha and seeing the govt being cornered. I'm a Free Indian and this is my view. Opinions can differ! but people should think in larger interest of the country. We cant hold the country for RANSOM

In a democratic setup one can't say only his will has to be done or else he will fast unto death.

Peaceful protest is everyone's right but Anna has gone too far beyond. He is threatening the law and order by asking the government saying that only his will should be done. If he wants to hold protest, let him accept the conditions of the police and fast! Also, peaceful protests should be allowed or are allowed. But they have to be done within the parameters of our constitution.

If the Govt. allows Anna to defy orders today, then someone else will come tomorrow.Government has to be consistent in handling law and order!

As for the fight against corruption, the Lokpal bill is in the Parliament. If we have any respect for our constitution, let the members of the parliament discuss the bill. Keeping up the pressure on the elected representatives is fine as long as the bill is debated through media and public support is galvanized, but defying law & order to ensure only his way has to be done is not acceptable.
