Mugabe's birthday declared public holiday

Harare, Nov 27 (IANS): The Zimbabwe government has decided to declare former President Robert Mugabe's birthday that falls on February 21 as a national holiday, authorities said on Monday.

The day was previously commemorated as the 21st February Movement by the party in celebration of the principles and ideals of Mugabe, reports Xinhua news agency.

Workers from his Zanu-PF party had pushed for his birthday to be declared a holiday in recognition of Mugabe's efforts in empowering the youth.

Mugabe resigned on November 21 after military and public pressure, ending his 37 years in power.
