Singapore deports Indian Imam for remarks against Jews, Christians

Singapore, Apr 4 (IANS): An Indian Imam will be fined and deported back to his native country for his remarks against Jews and Christians in his sermons, media reports said.

Nalla Mohamed Abdul Jameel, 47, was fined 4000 Singapore dollars ($2864) on Monday and will be deported to India after a video of one of his sermons showed him reciting a text that included the supplication, "God help us against the Jews and the Christians", Haaretz news reported.

The text read out during Friday prayers at Singapore's Jamae Chulia mosque in January was not a Quranic excerpt, but rather has been described as an old Arabic text that originated from the Imam's native village in India.

In an effort to make amends, the imam paid a visit to Singapore's Maghain Aboth Synagogue on Sunday morning in order to apologize to the community.

The community leader Rabbi Mordechai Abergel accepted his apology, thanking the Imam for his visit saying that it "sends a message that these bonds are not affected, and we share so much more than what divides us."

Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs released a statement on Monday saying that "any religious leader from any religion who makes such statements will be held accountable for their actions."

"Under Singapore law, we cannot, regardless of his religion, allow anyone to preach or act divisively and justify that by reference to a religious text," it said.

Imam had gone to apologize by Juws Rabby but not by christians? Here comes the real colour of that Imam.when he read (as he says)the lines from his village book? during his preaching ,was it a excuse to make things right so that he can stay over there?why did he not read before what is written .One has to get ready for a talk,or prayer ,a sermon ,read it.why did he not and realize it is wrong? Now he will be sent back.Good decision from singapoor Govt. One cant act in a guest land as in owns like as we want.Think and do.Now he should be punished here too for preaching such texts.Dont welcome him here but first send direct to jail.He spoiled our countrys name.or expell him elswhere where he can preach hate speach. In India we have enough from such ones.

Only in India someone can become PM or CM or remain as a minister even after preaching 'hate'.

Though I have not heard the sermon, I appreciate the Singapore government for the action.

Hope India should have such law to protect its unity.

India should not accept him and his apology. It's time India expels it's such fanatics for remarks against Christian, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Jews and Hindus rather than pampering them under guise of pseudo secularism which results in tension . This particular imam should be sent to Pakistan for him to understand what his so called 'brothers' who incite him to spew hatred are! And if they will accept him lol. The apology is of no use as apology after killing somebody is of no use

Shetty, what about religious freedom you enjoy in Bahrain ? I was in Bahrain for 17 years and it is one of the best countries in the world. Temple/Gurudwara/Church/Mosque everything is available for people to practice their beliefs without any fear. No attacks on churches, no desecration of religious places, no pelting stones on mosques, no breaking of statues and pretending drunk, no hate filled speeches. All kind of meat including beef and Pork is available in supermarkets and shops. No one is checking in your fridge what you store nor dictating you what to dress and whom to mix up with. Our wicked/.crooked politicians and their blind bhakts should learn from rulers and people of Bahrain true meaning of freedom.

Many countries all over the world have realised the big price to pay for intolerance, and have started recording the Friday sermons.

Some countries require the preacher to even hold a license without which he cannot go up the pulpit.

So, it looks like like intolerance in these countries is nipped in the bud.

Of course, there are several countries where the poor Governments do not have the money to install recording devices in all the hot spots.

But the world seems to be collectively moving towards greater tolerance.

    By force!
