Retail tur prices hit Rs 200/kg, add to consumers' pain

New Delhi, Oct 19, 2015, (PTI) Retail tur dal prices today shot up to Rs 200 per kg despite the government's steps to boost supply and check prices, aggravating consumers' woes.

Till last week, tur was available at Rs 185 per kg in the retail market.

The prices of pulses have increased unabated in the last few months due to a fall in domestic output by about 2 million tonnes (mt) to 17.20 mt in 2014-15 crop year (July-June) owing to deficient monsoon and unseasonal rains.

As per the data maintained by the Consumer Affairs Ministry, the maximum retail price of tur, also known as arhar dal, soared to Rs 200 per kg today, as against Rs 85 per kg in the year-ago period.

In the last five years, retail tur prices were ruling in the range of Rs 74-85 per kg, the data showed.

Urad too is retailing high at Rs 170 per kg today though it declined from Rs 187 per kg last week, but rates are still way higher than Rs 98 per kg that prevailed a year earlier.

Despite the government taking several measures, including imports and curbs on hoarding, to improve domestic supply, the prices of these two pulses have failed to cool.

To provide relief to the common man, the government is selling imported tur at subsidised rates in Delhi via 400 Kendriya Bhandar and Mother Dairy's Safal outlets.

Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu governments have also started selling imported tur dals.
In a bid to prevent hoarding, the government had yesterday imposed stock limits on pulses held by departmental stores, licensed food processors, importers and exports. There are stock limits already on traders.

That's not all. The state-owned MMTC has imported 5,000 tonnes of tur dal and floated revised tenders for import of 2,000 tonnes of chickpeas and is planning to float fresh bids for overseas purchase of additional tur dal to boost supply.

The Centre has asked all state governments to take the subsidised imported pulses from MMTC and supply in their states to bring down prices.

Now after almost 2years of BJP rule, people are totally fed up. There is nothing on development, jobs, cost of living.. today they are worried about even their neighbour with all the communal violence, thats going on around.

If we divide whole Indian land for specific crop with responsible hands and monitoring procedure it can help to reduce risk of skyrocket prices . Today is the pulses, tomorrow will be some other commodity.

At Rs 200/kilo the Pulse rate of the common Man has gone up by digits !!!

As per experts Indian households require a baseline minimum of 181 mt of cereals, 136 mt of vegetables, 45 mt of fruits and 41 mt of pulses. Under a 95% of the production target roughly there will be enough cereals, enough vegetables and fruits. But we have been falling short in pulses for several years. The consumption is not only increasing because of growing population but also showing spiraling effect due to changing consumption pattern led by rising income and preferences for vegetarian food. As population and income are increasing, the demand for this staple food is increasing in India.

According to Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR), Kanpur, the pulse requirement of the country is expected to have a required annual growth rate of 4.2% whereas the local production is either stagnant or decelerating.

If the Rabi crop output of 2015-2016 is good and there is less disease and pest issues , hopefully we should have some respite and fresh stock arrivals of pulses local & Imports should help where neither the Government nor Traders are able to pacify the Common man and normalize his pulse rate !

Assured returns to cane growers has also led to imbalance in Commercial Crop pattern since they are not shifting to other remunerative crops. This has resulted in historic low prices for sugar over a period compared to sky rocketing prices of other food items like grains and pulses. Farmer find cane cultivation is lucrative even in present situation, even though there are huge cane arrears. Govt is nurturing vote bank by fixing higher cane prices. This should stop.

I mean structural issues and not monsoon. The genesis of the recurring food crisis traced to half-hearted reforms and ill-advised cane pricing policies followed by congress. In most sugar-producing countries, the prices of sugarcane and sugar are inter-linked but there is no such correlation in India. Over a period of time, Central Government never addressed this basic issue which resulted in huge cane arrears and resultant suicide of farmers. Despite huge cane arrears farmers are still going in for sugar cane cultivation since farmers find cane prices lucrative on account wrong policies. This has led to imbalance in Commercial Crop pattern since they are not shifting to other remunerative crops particularly pulses and grains. This has resulted in historic low prices for sugar over a period compared to sky rocketing prices of other food items like grains and pulses.

Non Veg ban veggies loss, non veggies profit.

Expenses will be more for veggies because forced competition has arised due to lack of cheap meat available. Profit for non vegetarians because veg is cheaper than non veg.

The BJP has to introduce a national beef-ban to add fuel to the skyrocketing pulse price.

Then introduce three days fasting/week with yoga for everybody in India, thus a disease-free India.

jeevan, mangalore, We know you and the other feku bhakts are not worried about the price rise as you'll get your supply from Nagpur directly. It is only common middle class family who are suffering . Shame on you bhakts who are justifying the prise rise.

Mr. Modi will be starting his royal tours of foreign countries to shake hands with the Indians abroad and also to dine with the world rulers but less countries now to visit, because the foreign countries are watching what is going on in India.

He will be having his own chef to cook his country meal of Gujarat.

Let the millions may go hungry. Who cares?
