Mangalore, Oct 24: The government has finally decided not to withhold the salary grants to 49 aided colleges, a move that has been welcomed by the Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT).

A press release issued by AMUCT general secretary Ummappa Poojary here on Monday, commended the timely intervention by higher education minister D H Shankaramurthy and the role played by MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik in coaxing the government to withdraw the order. Poojary also thanked FUCTAK president A M Narahari for his assistance in the matter.

The release said that on Tuesday October 10 the teachers of the affected colleges led by Prof A M Narahari had met Capt Ganesh Karnik who immediately appealed to the Shankaramurthy to withdraw the order.

The order, if implemented, would have affected about 2000 employees. The order had been issued because these colleges had procured less than B-grade accreditation from NAAC. AMUCT has requested the government to give a three years time for these colleges to get the necessary accreditation from NAAC and to de-link NAAC grade from salary grants.

AMUCT also plans to take up the issue at the FUCTAK meeting at Bangalore on Friday October 27, the release said.
