Mangalore, Sep 28: World Tourism Day was celebrated with gusto by students of various colleges on Wednesday September 27 marked by cleaning drives at Malpe beach and Sultan Battery here.

NSS volunteers of Sri Gokarnatheshwara College held a jatha from Lady Hill to Sultan Batterry. Local corporator Kamalaksha Salian flagged off the jatha.  The tourist spot was then cleaned by the students.

Meanwhile, school students too involved themselves in the drive by cleaning up Malpe beach in Udupi.

The tourism department of Mangalore University hosted a day-long programme at the Yakshagana Kala Mandir. The seminar on 'Tourism Day Observance' was inaugurated by Indian Airlines manager Nagesh Shetty, while dean of the faculty of commerce Prof T Mallikarjunappa presided.

Among those present at the seminar were MTA co-ordinator Dr Mustiari Begum, MTA faculty member Carena Crasta and student representative Ravi Kiran.
