Udupi, Sep 18: The electricity-deprived SC/ST colony of Banglegudde, Aroor-Kurudunje village of Kunjal gram panchayat will no more have to live in darkness, with the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) in association with Selco Solar Light Pvt Ltd here launching the "Green Light Project".

The colony consists of 12 clay houses belonging to wage labourers who do not have electricity and cannot afford it either. These houses were recognised for the implementation of the project and accordingly 20 watts solar home lighting systems were installed in them free of cost.

Periodical studies will be conducted to understand the impact of the project and to compare the use of kerosene lamps as against solar lighting systems. Studies will also include change in lifestyle of elders and children, impact on health, monthly savings on kerosene and overall impact on the residents of the colony.

The project was launched by Harish Pande, CEO, SELCO, by switching on the system at one of the houses.
