Puttur, Aug 30: For long there is a complaint that the interest shown by the government in starting new colleges is not shown in appointing enough staff in these colleges.  It is quite true too.  Most of the schools and colleges are facing dearth of teachers and lecturers.  It is not that there are no competent people.  But the government has been very negligent in appointing them.

This is the case with the college at Bettampady near here too. Students have been facing innumerable problems owing to lack of lecturers in the college.  Lessons are lacking behind and the exams are approaching.

Enraged by this the boycotted classes and took to streets on Tuesday August 28.  They have now threatened to continue agitating till enough lecturers are appointed.  Though MLA Shakuntala Shetty has assured them of taking adequate measures, students have decided to continue with their agitation.  This has now worsened the situation.

Since there were no English lecturers in the college right from the beginning, lecturers from Uppinangady College were coming to teach on part time basis.  But the students of the Uppinangady College protested against this arrangement and stopped these lecturers from coming to Bettampady.  Since this stop-gap arrangement too failed, Bettampady College students are now demanding for fulltime lecturers.
